The authors of this article consider the progress of the Soviet Marxist scientific convention in relation to the problem of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern times. The authors believe that the process of defining a chronological border separating the Middle Ages from the Modern times began in the mid-1930s, when a course on civil history studies was again introduced in the USSR schools. By the beginning of the 1940s there were two main opinions on this issue. The first one was related to the remarks of I.V. Stalin, S.M. Kirov and A.M. Zhdanov, regarding the abridgment of a textbook on the Modern history for secondary schools, prepared by the team of authors led by N.M. Lukin. In this document, «the leaders» expressed a necessity to begin the narration of the Modern history with the events of the French Revolution. The opinion of «the leaders» was theoretically substantiated in the works of the Modern time historians, who made a lot of efforts to confirm the French Revolution milestone nature.
