Советские медиевисты в роли идеологов: Е.А. Косминский на посту главного редактора журнала «News» в 1952–1956 гг.
In 1952-1956 Academician E.A. Kosminsky was appointed the editor-in-chief of the “News” magazine, which was published in English in the USSR and addressed to a foreign audience. Thus, he became involved in the ideological struggle, the instrument of which was the Soviet periodicals. The medievalist not only wrote articles for “News”, but also took care of its successful functioning. At the same time, the historian found himself involved in the vicissitudes of the editorial board's life, whose members in 1953 almost fell victim to late Stalinism political trial.
At the same time, the medievalist’s articles about the problems of current foreign policy, his radio appearances addressed to a Western audience, indicate that E.A. Kosminsky organically used the obligatory Soviet political rhetoric, which was formed in the Soviet press, and fully corresponded to the propaganda tasks of Soviet journalism. Nevertheless, not all of his articles for “News” got into print, many of them were edited beyond recognition, while his authorship was attributed to significant ideological texts that he had not write.
