HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

The article examines the potential of large language models (LLMs) for automated analysis of value-laden and patriotic discourse in Russian-language social media. Using a corpus of posts from VK, Odnoklassniki and Telegram (2023–2025), it investigates the extent to which automatic coding results align with expert annotation based on a specially developed categorical scheme. The codebook ...

Radina N., Balakina Y. V., Bannikov K.,
The timeliness of the presented research is justified by the significant role of the media during a crisis, since the growth of content consumption increases the ability to influence the audience in order to form certain attitudes and change behavioral patterns. In addition, despite the fact that issues of media framing as one of the ...

In this work, I show the perspectives revealed for analysis of the problem of scepticism regarding meaning (‘the Kripke’s problem’) by usage of the categories of linguistic pragmatics (performativity, the distinction of locution, illocution and perlocution). I provide a critical analysis of the argumentation against scepticism proposed by V. A. Ladov and E. V. Borisov, who appeal to performative ...

Plungian V., Acta Linguistica Petropolitana.

Applicative constructions in the Northwest Caucasian languages
Arkadiev P., Lander Y., Bagirokova I., , in: Applicative Constructions in the World's Languages.: Berlin: De Gruyter Mouton, 2024. P. 869–912.
This chapter describes applicative constructions in the polysynthetic Northwest Caucasian languages, which are typologically unusual in several respects. First, these languages possess an extraordinarily rich system of applicatives whose semantic functions range from benefactive, comitative and malefactive to fairly specialized spatial meanings. Second, the Northwest Caucasian applicatives invariably introduce indirect objects, thus almost never affecting ...

Towards pragmatic construction typology: The case of discourse formulae
Bychkova P., Rakhilina E. V., , in: Discourse phenomena in typological perspective.: John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2023. Ch. 3 P. 35–63.
This paper discusses the frame method developed by Moscow lexical typology group in application to pragmatic constructions, namely, discourse formulae (idiomatic answers like Fair enough or You bet!). The methods of data collection and analysis are illustrated with a case study of negative discourse formulae in four Slavic languages. The study shows how the field of negation is organized, and how answering strategies differ in ...

Speech Acts and Actions in Legal Language: conceptual analysis
2020 Vol. 15 No. 1 P. 12–26
Reconsideration of legal phenomena by legal language means is a typical feature of analytical tradition in the legal philosophy, since legal regulations are expressed not only in language, but are inextricably linked with the linguistic content of rules whilst applying them. Language as a form of communication and representation of the world is a holistic ...

In this paper I describe the grammatical markers and relevant lexical elements used in different types of interrogative sentences in Bashkir, and their distribution. I discuss polar and alternative questions in Bashkir, which both involve a special interrogative particle =mE, and their intonation patterns, and review the non-interrogative uses of the particle =mE. I discuss content ...

How independent can dependent marking be?
Lander Yu., Vyunova A., Journal of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS 2018 No. 5 P. 185–192
This paper argues that cases, adpositions, and converbal markers need not function as markers of syntactic dependency. It is shown that in Kabardian (West Caucasian), the constituents headed by converbs and postpositions as well as case-marked NPs can appear as independent syntactic predicates, although this may correlate with the degree to which they function as ...

Convention and common ground
Geurts L. B., Mind and Language 2018 Vol. 33 P. 115–129
Conventions are regularities in social behaviour of the past that enable us to coordinate our actions. Some conventions are lawlike: they are expected to be observed always or nearly always. However, in order to coordinate our actions, it may suffice that a precedent has occurred often enough, and sometimes even a single precedent will do. So, ...
