Towards pragmatic construction typology: The case of discourse formulae
Ch. 3. P. 35–63.
Bychkova P., Rakhilina E. V.
This paper discusses the frame method developed by Moscow lexical typology group in application to pragmatic constructions, namely, discourse formulae (idiomatic answers like Fair enough or You bet!). The methods of data collection and analysis are illustrated with a case study of negative discourse formulae in four Slavic languages. The study shows how the field of negation is organized, and how answering strategies differ in Russian, Polish, Slovene and Serbian. The results are addressed from the point of view of the theory of speech acts.

The article examines the words фигушки and хренушки (derivatives of the vulgar words фиг and хрен) as specific means of expressing negation in Russian colloquial speech. They have two main uses: first, they function as an independent response – a refusal to do something (– Лучше вылезай! – Фигушки, вы драться будете ‘– You’d better get out! – No ...

The book is dedicated to the memory of a remarkable Russian language scholar, Tatyana Grigoryevna Vinokur (1924–1992). The range of issues addressed in the collected scholarly articles reflects the breadth of Tatyana Grigoryevna's research interests: the history of language, poetics, the language of fiction, stylistics, speech culture, problems of communication studies, and many other topics. ...

This volume contributes to the growing body of cutting-edge research into the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach in linguistics. It explores the broad range of possible applications enabled by the NSM approach, from linguistic studies of semantics and culture to cross-cultural studies, psychology and childhood education. The volume builds on previous studies, bringing a diversity ...

The article examines the potential of large language models (LLMs) for automated analysis of value-laden and patriotic discourse in Russian-language social media. Using a corpus of posts from VK, Odnoklassniki and Telegram (2023–2025), it investigates the extent to which automatic coding results align with expert annotation based on a specially developed categorical scheme. The codebook ...

The article discusses types of interpretation that Russian complex sentences with factive, implicative and interpretation verbs get under negation and modal operators. By default, the external negative and modal context affects only the main situation. However, one findsexceptions of this rule. We call ‘transparent readings’ those readings in which the exter-nal context affects semantically both the matrix ...

In this article, I discuss Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer’s ideas about the nature of language and the metaphysical residue that seems to be present in the realm of immediate experience, despite all the criticism and success of positive knowledge. This includes, first and foremost, the ability to perceive objects, facts, and possible worlds which humans have from ...

The timeliness of the presented research is justified by the significant role of the media during a crisis, since the growth of content consumption increases the ability to influence the audience in order to form certain attitudes and change behavioral patterns. In addition, despite the fact that issues of media framing as one of the ...

Over the past half century, the analysis of questions has played an important role in the development
of the syntactic theory. Despite this, echo questions have been given quite little attention, and
most studies on echo questions focused on data from a single language. In this paper, I review strategies
of forming echo questions of different types in ...

This study presents a framework for evaluating the effectiveness of language models (LLMs) in detecting disagreement across a wide range of pragmatic strategies, from mitigated forms to overt verbal aggression. Special attention is given to complex cases of implicit manifestations of irony and sarcasm, which pose significant challenges for both automated analysis and interpersonal communication. ...

This paper discusses the Routinicon, a new constructicographic resource for the description of conversational routines. Conversational routines are defined as conventional formulaic expressions that language speakers use in standard extralinguistic situations (cf. The chapter presents a case study of the repetition mechanism within the development of discourse formulae, i.e., multi-word formulaic replies similar to yes and no. It closely examines the process of pragmaticalization in the Russian formula Kak že! (‘how part’) and its duplicated counterpart. The diachronic corpus data shows that the formula Kak že! emerged ...

Human communication consists in exchanging information between communicants. Communicants depart from their personal subjective perception of the objective reality, based on their individual understandings, impressions, and associations. Exchanging information means to realign such personal perceptions with each other. How can two speakers be certain that they understand the words in one and the same way? ...

In this work, I show the perspectives revealed for analysis of the problem of scepticism regarding meaning (‘the Kripke’s problem’) by usage of the categories of linguistic pragmatics (performativity, the distinction of locution, illocution and perlocution). I argue that particular restrictions on the recoverability of elided negation in fragment answers in negative-concord languages follow from the semantics of questions. Drawing parallels with other ellipsis phenomena, I also highlight the role of Agree in making certain elided heads recoverable. This invalidates a major argument against the analysis of negative-concord items as universal ...
