‘Hedgehog Versus ‘Relatives: Researchers Measure How the Brain Responds to Unexpected Words During Natural Speech
Russian neurophysiologists, including researchers from HSE University, have demonstrated the feasibility of using event-related fields (ERFs) to study brain activity during natural speech perception. The researchers showed that this approach can be applied not only to individual words but also to continuous speech. Their findings indicate that words whose meanings differ significantly from the preceding context require longer processing times. The study also reveals that the brain processes function words in two stages: first, it identifies their grammatical role and then uses this information to predict the next word. The study has been published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

Scientists Develop Algorithm for More Reliable Processors in Data Centres
Researchers from HSE MIEM and Samara University have developed the LRF-3D algorithm to automatically bypass idle nodes in three-dimensional networks-on-chip. Thanks to its hierarchical architecture, the algorithm outperforms existing solutions in both speed and path accuracy, improving processor reliability for use in data centres, supercomputers, and AI computing. The source code and test results are publicly available.

Признаки и приемы, используемые для определения настроения собеседника при текстовой коммуникации в мессенджерах

Психологические исследования: электронный научный журнал. 2024. Т. 17. № 98. Статья 6.
Sysoeva T., Красницкая К. В.

Instant messaging is becoming highly important in modern daily life. This type of communication differs significantly from face-to-face communication: non-verbal signals typically used to understand the interlocutor’s emotions (facial expressions, gestures, etc.) are inaccessible to observation, and the non-verbal signals that replace them in text messages are intentional. At the same time, recognition of other’s emotions is also available in this communication format, but the specific cues used for such recognition remain poorly studied. A few studies have shown that some message characteristics change depending on the sender’s mood, and message recipients are sensitive to the presence of some cues, making conclusions about the interlocutor’s mood. However, no attempts have been made to fully describe all the cues used for the interlocutor’s emotion perception in instant messaging. We surveyed 353 respondents (Mage = 18.07, 85.84% female), asking them to describe the cues they rely on to understand the mood of their interlocutor, as well as to rate the possibility to recognize the other’s mood when communicating via instant messaging and the frequency with which such recognition is correct. Overall, respondents reported that they often successfully interpret the mood of their interlocutors, while perceiving others as less accurate in recognizing their own emotions. Among the most frequently mentioned cues by which one can determine the mood of an interlocutor in text-based communication are the use of emoticons, punctuation marks, the length of messages, and changes in the interlocutor’s typical way of messaging. The importance of preliminary acquaintance with the interlocutor is perhaps fundamental to perception of her emotions in instant messaging.

Self-esteem and self-reported personality traits: When attitudes toward traits make a difference
Shchebetenko S., De Marchis G., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality questionnaires do not directly record recurring conduct. Rather, they elicit task-bounded reports of personality attributions: how respondents characterise themselves using personality-descriptive content. From this perspective, established associations between self-esteem and self-reported personality may depend on the evaluative meaning attached to that content. We tested whether attitudes toward the Big Five traits moderated associations between self-esteem and corresponding personality reports ...

Hypergraphs from multivariate connectivity: caCOH-based EEG/MEG representation
Vlasenko D., Saranskaia I., Zakharov D., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–16
Hypergraphs provide a natural framework for representing neurophysiological interactions distributed across sets of sensors. A key methodological question is how hyperedges should be defined from frequency-resolved electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) data. We demonstrate a construction strategy in which hyperedges are obtained from canonical coherence (caCOH), an extension of coherence that estimates coupling between multidimensional signal spaces. To ...

The Role of Set Size and Attention in Face Ensemble Processing
Koch D., Fedorova E., Kleeva D. et al., European Journal of Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 63 No. 10 Article e70547
The visual system can extract statistical information from multiple human faces in the form of ensemble representation. Despite extensive research, the automaticity of face ensemble encoding is still under debate. Some studies suggest that face ensemble encoding occurs automatically, while others postulate a capacity-limited processing that requires attentional resources. This inconsistency might be attributed to ...

Rubtsova O., Gorbunova E. S.,

Three theoretical premises inform this research. First, in line with Anderson (1983) and Wodak, my principal operating assumption has been that a nationa is an 'imagined community' (Anderson 1983) and that national identities are iagined, constructed, 'generated and reproduced through discourse' (Wodak et al. 1999: 186). The second premise is formulated by Hall, who describes ...
