The paper analyzes the industrial development of the BRICS countries (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). While the approaches to the formation and implementation of industrial policies in the countries of the association are similar, the results of industrial development are different for them. It is concluded that despite the achieved level of progress in certain production sectors and areas of technological modernization of industry, the BRICS countries have not yet reached the trajectory of accelerated development of their industrial sector. The results obtained allow us to raise the question of the advisability of developing model institutional mechanisms for the formation of a variable roadmap for improving the efficiency of industrial development in the BRICS countries on the basis of deep technological modernization of the industrial sector.
