The paper examines restrictions on clitic climbing in French. Three types of restrictions are identified - restrictions on the matrix verb (its frequency, semantics, and the presence of a preposition with which the infinitive clause is attached), restrictions on the clitics themselves, and syntactic restrictions (presence of negative particles, complex verb form). The existence of the restrictions is confirmed on the corpus data, as well as on evaluations made by native French speakers.
