Византийская иконография Богоматери и нидерландское искусство XV – начала XVI вв.: от повторений к интерпретациям
The paper discovers the influence of Byzantine iconography on the Netherlandish painting of the XVth - early XVIth
centuries. A number of Byzantine icons became a source of imitation, which, in turn, gained high popularity in connection with attempts to unite the Eastern and Western branches of the Christian church. The author discusses how two types of Madonna images – Virgin of Tenderness and «Playing Child» - influenced the Netherlandish masters such as Eine of Brussels, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus, Gerard David and some anonymous artists. The spread of Byzantine iconography took place in the context of the
discussion about a new crusade for the liberation of Constantinople, which had an impact on the number of works created. At the same time, some painters interpreted the original versions of the icons freely enough, which is generally typical of the Netherlandish art in the XVth century.
