Silencing alternative voices in times of war in Ukraine and Russia
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has turned out to be not only a full-fledged military conflict but also a war against oppositional journalism. In Ukraine, several independent journalists and bloggers were also arrested for “spreading Russian propaganda," but the the violations of freedom of expression in Ukraine have not become a popular subject of academic analysis. With the aim of contributing to this research area, this chapter discusses how both Russian and Ukrainian authorities have been striving to shut down alternative discourses, trying to stabilize meanings favourable to their political goals. The chapter also analyses four cases of convicted oppositionists, comparing their interpretations of the war, and tracing what alternative meanings were silenced and marginalized.
