s it not the case that any attempt to legitimize politics by disjoining these dimensions of human experience - history, memory and power - is doomed to failure? It is from this intuition in the form of a question - and from the curiosity to verify its validity - that was born the ambition to bring together in the following pages the works that give shape to the present volume.
Further upstream, a question was posed, and the following observation was made: what is the origin of our compelling need to legitimize what we say and do in politics? How can we explain this implicit and latent fear of seeing our intentions sink into absurdity, idiocy and even ineptitude? On closer examination, it seems to us that, because they bring together beings of language who coexist with each other, our societies are necessarily driven by a quest for meaning. And none of them can free itself from a reflection on history, memory and power, the three irreducible poles of its condition which, responding to each other, dictate its choices.
