Стоит ли молчать о “традиции молчания”?
Mills uses against John Rawls's concept an argument of the "pattern of silence", which is
essentially a tradition of deliberate understatement. However, tradition, tacitly understood in
a characteristic sense, can become the basis for criticism of any theory. The question arises: in
what cases can we talk about the silence of tradition, and when is it better to “be silent” about it?
To answer this question, we observe the case of the discovery of an observable feature in private
discourse, compare them with the precedent of Charles Mills, and evaluate the connection of the
discovery with the concept of performativity as one of the elements of the modern analytic
method. This allows us to conclude that the possibility of using the "pattern of silence" within the
framework of the analytical method in the study of social practice should be limited, since,
understood too broadly, it turns from an instrument that promotes the development of scientific
knowledge into an instrument that hinders it.
