Applying terminological competence approach to home reading in the esp course for the students of the faculty of economics
Home reading as an integral part of professional education and one of the independent types of work performs developing, cognitive and teaching functions. Terminological competence approach, implying three levels of terminological competence, is applied for home reading assignments at the Professional English course. This study attempts to investigate the application and bene ts of terminological competence approach for doing self-reading. Sixty two students of the Faculty of Economics from Perm State University participated in this study. Their English ability ranged from A2 to B2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference. They were assigned to self-read several articles and received a task. A total of three stages were conducted during the study. After nishing the nal stage, students completed a survey. The results showed that all di culties which the learners faced at the beginning of the assignment disappeared to the nal stage. Based on the results, the terminological competence approach appeared to be e cient in home reading tasks.
