At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

The Features of Quasi-Periodic ELF-Radiation Outside the Plasmosphere

Geomagnetism and Aeronomy. 2023. Vol. 63. No. 6. P. 710–720.
P.A.Bespalov, O.N.Savina, G.M.Neshchetkin

New information about ELF/VLF emissions is being considered outside the plasmasphere, contained in the data of observations performed on the Van Allen Probe spacecraft. Near the apogee of the trajectory behind the plasmasphere, quasi-periodic sequences of bursts of electromagnetic radiation at frequencies below 2 kHz with deep intensity modulation were observed. Morphologically, the separate burst of radiation is similar to a fragment of QP 2 emissions. The burst sequences under consideration can have different time structures. First, they can be clearly periodic. Second, bursts of different intensities can periodically alternate in them. Third, the sequence of bursts can have a more complex temporal structure. The excitation of radiations that are considered noise by their nature probably occurs during the development of cyclotron instability in detached plasma regions, which exist outside the plasmasphere after magnetic disturbances. Many properties of radiation are explained by the theory of a plasma magnetospheric maser, which admits the existence of a self-oscillating process of radiation generation due to modulation of the anisotropy of the distribution function of energetic electrons. The theory explains the new results of observations of quasi-periodic emissions with a more complex temporal structure in the presence of a periodic external influence on the dynamics of a plasma magnetospheric maser. In all the considered cases, the absence of geomagnetic pulsations with periods comparable to the periods of repetition of spectral forms on the spectrograms of electromagnetic radiation was checked in the data of the spacecraft magnetometer. Model calculations have shown
that an acoustic-gravity wave in the ionosphere at the base of a magnetic field tube with a cloud of detached
plasma can provide the formation of the observed temporal structure of radiation.

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R., Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering 2026 Vol. 886 P. 249–255
Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular ...

A discrete-time model is presented for the self-organization of the X/Twitter social network to the edge of a phase transition, characterized by avalanche-like propagation of information in the network. The model is based on the analogy between the critical dynamics of the X social network and sandpile cellular automata with Manna rule on the Chung-Lu ...

Superconducting properties of metallic micro- and nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors. Of particular interest is the nonequilibrium current-induced state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channel. The most interesting phenomenon here is the stepped I–V characteristic, explained by a process known as phase slip center activation. If the origin of such step-like ...

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 579 Article 150159
Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors; however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related descriptors. Three ML algorithms ...

Махлуф М., Ozhegov R., Elezov M. et al., Фотоника 2026 Vol. 20 No. 6 P. 414–423
This paper compares the ranging precision of direct time-of-flight (dToF) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) LiDAR architectures, both using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD). Both systems operate at 1550 nm with a 50 ps pulsed laser and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC). The dToF configuration achieved approximately 100 µm precision at 10 m, while the NLOS configuration achieved 500 µm precision for ...

Indications of the Impact of the Influence of Large-Scale Atmospheric Disturbances on Quasiperiodic ELF/VLF Emissions Inside the Plasmasphere

The models of excitation of quasiperiodic ELF/VLF emissions with spectral shape repetition periods from 10 to 300 s are discussed. The primary cause of quasiperiodic (QP) emissions is cyclotron instability of electron radiation belts. Relatively slow processes of cyclotron instability evolution are well described within the framework of the plasma magnetospheric maser (PMM) theory based on the averaged self-consistent system ...
