Под лупой комментария. (Жилищная политика Советского государства и ее отражение в произведениях М.А. Булгакова)
.
The motif of a communal apartment evolves in Bulgakov’s prose and plays in portrayal of various events and figures:
government- compression of living space (uplotneniye) and self-comression (samouplotneniye), house committees (domkom) and tenant associations (zhiltovarishestvo), ‘landlords’ (kvarthoz), apartment’s authority (kvartupolnomochennyy), and much more.
The article shows how different aspects and dynamics of the housing policies of the early Soviet state are reflected in Bulgakov’s creative world. The published material was collected while working on the project “The Universal Digital Commentary on Fiction of the 1920s” (led by E. Abelyuk, E. Davydova, National Research University Higher School of Economics).

In his article, V. Kantor addresses what seems to be an old topic – the controversy between the Slavophiles and the Westernizers, but the temporary situation in which this dispute takes place, that is, the beginning of the 20th century, largely changes the pathos of this conflict. The Russian philosopher Fyodor Stepun, who studied in ...

Interest of Mikhail Bulgakov to foxtrot «Hallelujah» is obvious. Researchers explain this writer’s interest in different ways. For example, Victor Losev calls this foxtrot «a blasphemous parody of Christian worship.» A natural question arises – what is the blasphemous nature of this foxtrot? May be the original English text? But there is no evidence that ...

The conventional reading of the “ancient” chapters of Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita attributes the role of an active moral subject to Pilate and a largely passive role to Ieshua. Proceeding from this assumption, the encounter between these characters is interpreted as an ethical event, in which Pilate is sup- posed to make decisions based entirely on his own ...

In his works M. S. Petrovsky assumes that the source of the scene of Berlioz’s death in M. A. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” was an episode of the A. I. Kuprin’s story “Every wish”. We suppose that one can regard, as a nearly even more important pretext of the ending of chapter 3 ...

The paper examines the rejection of evil as an important narrative pattern in The Master and Margarita. Despite the unorthodox and controversial representation of evil and the absence of an unequivocal solution to this problem, Bulgakov’s novel foregrounds the situations in which the characters are supposed to identify and reject evil. For this reason, the metaphors of ...

The article shows that the housing policy of the new government, in addition to a pronounced housing deficit was defined by a number of other, including ideological, factors. Although the history of the communal system has its roots in the pre-revolutionary past, however, progressive disintegration of the home began in Russia after October 1917. Beginning ...

The article analyzes the “ancient chapters” of The Master and Margarita from the perspective of the category of eventness, which makes possible to explicate the understanding of religious existence essentially revised by Bulgakov. The research maintains that this revision lay in the same direction as the major philosophical quests of the 20th c.; it consisted ...
