Текст через призму когнитивного календарного цикла: компьютерный анализ чата научной группы в период выполнения проекта
The article is devoted to the problem of studying communication in small social groups. On
the material of text messages exchanged between four researchers during three years of the project
in the field of computer linguistics, we test the hypothesis that the properties and characteristics of
text products generated by participants depend on the stages of the calendar cognitive cycle to
which the research activity is subordinated. The study applies such methods of natural language
processing as sentiment analysis, topic modeling, keyword extraction, and clustering based on the
two-component Gaussian mixture model. The results confirm the hypothesis and indicate that the
emotional tone of text data, keywords of messages, the distribution of weights of different topics in
them, and the percentage of unique words to repeated words do depend on the calendar cognitive
cycle of project execution. However, most of the measured properties of the texts produced by
researchers are sensitive to a greater extent to the outer contour of the calendar cognitive cycle, i.e.
the stages of the entire project (distribution of topic weights, lists of keywords and sentiment
values), and only some — values of the Type-Token Ratio measure, results of keyword clustering
using the two-component Gaussian mixture model — to the inner contour (distribution of work
during one year). Consequently, we can say that the speech behavior of researchers in a small
scientific group is more subject to the cognitive strategy of macroplanning than to the microtargets
of each year. It is also proved that these properties are quite accessible to measurement and formal
representation using the tools of computational linguistics. The novelty of the results is associated
with the fact that for the first time, based on the application of computational linguistics
technologies to the materials of informal scientific communication in a small group, we made
conclusions about the relationship of cognitive and communicative processes in the joint activities
of such a team.
