Онлайн или офлайн? Сравнительный анализ студенческой оценки курса английского языка двух форм обучения
Student evaluation of teaching (SET) leads to increased quality of learning and ensures student retention and satisfaction. SET and it various aspects have been the subject of hundreds of studies; however, some aspects remain underresearched. Among such aspects are the influence of the format of delivery of a course (offline or online) on student evaluation of this course, as well as student evaluation of foreign language courses and the factors that form it. This study was conducted to examine the differences in student evaluation of the same English language course delivered in the face-to-face and online formats, and to determine what factors correlate positively with student satisfaction. The research is based on statistical and thematic analyses of the results of a survey. The survey was conducted among undergraduate students twice: in 2021 after the course “Language for Specific Purposes” was delivered online, and in 2022 after the course was delivered offline. The results of the analyses show that the key aspects that predict student satisfaction, such as motivation, interest, expectations from the course, achievement of the learning outcomes, do not depend on the format of course delivery. The students were more satisfied with the course in the online format and rated almost all its aspects slightly higher, compared to the course in the face-to-face format. Instructors’ performance was not the strongest predictor of student satisfaction; however, it was more important for the students who took the course delivered online. Development of reading and writing skills were crucial for student satisfaction with the course in both formats. The findings can be taken into consideration when designing foreign language courses delivered online and offline.
