This article reviews the attempt to trace the development of the multimedia system on the alternative media resources that are gaining huge popularity among the readers who tend to mistrust the information of the mainstream media. The subject of analysis is the content of Russian International News Agency Sputnik, that is viewed by some researchers as an alternative to the leading international mass media in English. The theory of the issue is based on the author's notion of the multimedia and ways of its development in 21-st century. The article also reviews milestones in the development of multimedia and convergence that boosted the development of the modern media. The scholar also takes a look at various multimedia elements that enhance the development of alternative storytelling in the materials of Sputnik. The article also reviews the content from various language editions of the international news agency. That can be classified as alternative on the international level. Among the elements the author singles out mediatext, illustrations, video, infographics and also injects and embeds that became popular in multimedia articles at the beginning of the 21-st century. During the analysis the author pays special attention to the unique features of the content that were never reflected in the mainstream media. The article contains tables that help to understand the ways the multimedia tools can be used in international alternative environment. At the end the author develops the paradigm of the alternative media content development for the upcoming years.
