The paper is a research of different types of historical sources to clarify the status of Caffa towards the Golden Horde. Treaties of city authorities with the Golden Horde khans, state attributes and notes of contemporaries are analyzed. Author finds that Caffa recognized the power of the Golden Horde, but that power was limited and sometimes nominal.
