The Vedic hapax vī́cyā (ṚS 10,10.6) and ví- obscenum: linguistic and philological notes on Vedic sexual slang
P. 61–78.
Kulikov L.
The first part of this paper offers a new analysis of an obscure passage from the dialogue hymn Ṛgveda 10.10 (pāda ṚS 10.10.6d), paying special attention to the meaning of the unclear hapax vī́cyā, which I tentatively translate as ‘taking an obscene posture’. The second part of the paper discusses a number of other formations (foremost, verbal compounds) containing the preverb ví- that are employed in obscene contexts as well as some other lexemes belonging to the sexual register (slang).

Russian verbal circumfixes have been a topic of interest among linguists for a while now, with different approaches taken to their analysis. This paper discusses possible etymological connections of two Vedic forms that are considered problematic in Mayrhofer’s etymological dictionary, ¯ahanás- ‘lustful, obscene’ and jaghána- ‘genitals, pubis’.
I argue that there are good reasons to connect these formations with the root han ‘beat, strike, hit, kill’ (< PIE *gwhen-), originally probably denoting repeated strikes or lashes. This meaning could easily develop the ...
