‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

A Note on Χαναναίους in Hos 4:18a LXX
Yurovitskaya M., Zeitschrift fur die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft 2026 Vol. 138 No. 3 P. 392–400
I propose to relate the puzzling rendering of סָבְאָם  as Χαναναίους in Hos 4:18a LXX to the only other occurrence of סֹבֶא  “strong drink, wine, or beer”, Isa 1:22, where the term is translated in the LXX as οἱ κάπηλοι “retailers”. Given that כְּנַעֲנִי  “Canaanite” functioned as a designation for “trader”, I argue that both verses ultimately reflect ...

Употребление будущего времени в греческом тексте псалмов и гипотеза об «эсхатологизации» греческой Псалтири
Seleznev M., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2025 Т. 29 № 2 С. 401–410
The crystallization of apocalyptic and eschatological ideas in the Jewish tradition began during the Babylonian captivity and continued during the Second Temple period. In a developed form, Jewish eschatology is presented in the book of Daniel (second century B.C.), in the book of Enoch (last centuries B.C.), in the New Testament, and in numerous Jewish ...

Параллели между Септуагинтой и Таргумами: на примере перевода מַשְׁבֵּר в Иса 37:3 и 4 Цар 19:3
Yurovitskaya M., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2025 Т. 29 № 2 С. 651–661
It has long been recognised that the LXX and Targumim share common exegesis of a number of verses and words. In contrast to the hypothesis of a direct influence of the early forms of Targumim on the LXX, I believe that these versions rather reflect a common approach to the interpretation of biblical texts, as ...

Translation of Hebrew tenses in the Greek Psalter: choosing between past, present, and future
Seleznev M., Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies (JSCS) 2024 Vol. 57 P. 73–93
In the LXX-Psalter, in about 80% of cases, the choice between past, present, and future/non-indicative (in the present paper we consider future tense and non-indicative moods together) was predetermined by the tenses of the original. As for the remaining 20%, some of these “abnormal” renderings can be explained as inheriting the tense value from the ...

Стих Ис 19:18-19 звучит по-разному в масоретском тексте Библии, в Септуагинте и в кумранских рукописях. Согласно кумранским рукописям 1QIsa  и 4QIsb  (к сожалению, в других кумранских списках Исайи этот стих безнадежно поврежден):  «В тот день будет пять городов в земле египетской, говорящих на языке Ханаана и клянущихся Господом Воинств. Один из них будет называться ʽir ...

Homonymous Roots Between Exegesis and Textual Criticism: The Case of חבלי־מות and חבלי שאול in Ps 18,5-6
Yurovitskaya M., Biblica 2024 Vol. 105 No. 4 P. 494–505
Discussing the variants חבלי־מות in Psa 18,5 and משברי־מות in 2 Sam 22,5 I join Talmon in considering them not transmission errors, but synonymous readings. However, I demonstrate that the equating of these two terms as both denoting “birth pangs” is not attested in the Hebrew Bible but is a later exegetical development. I argue ...

Isaiah 2:6b and the Bible of Justin Martyr
Yurovitskaya M., Vetus Testamentum 2024 Vol. 74 No. 3 P. 455–463
It has long been recognized that the syntactically incorrect phrase in the MT of Isa 2:6b (כִּי מָלְאוּ מִקֶּדֶם וְעֹנְנִים כַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים “for they are full from the east and soothsayers like the Philistines”) suffers from a textual error involving the omission of a word. According to the commonly accepted conjecture, a derivative of the root ...

Νόμος/νόμοι in the Septuagint and the Letter to the Hebrews
Seleznev M., Novum Testamentum 2023 Vol. 65 No. 4 P. 498–516
In the Septuagint, the word “law” (in the singular) always refers to the Law of God. The singular is semantically loaded: the Law is one, just as there is one God and one Temple. This translation strategy is the same for all the books of the Old Greek translation. The appearance of the plural forms ...

Множественное число νόμοι в Септуагинте и переинтерпретация пророчеств Иер 31/38 греческим переводчиком
Seleznev M., Аристей. Aristeas: Вестник классической филологии и античной истории 2023 № 1 С. 15–27
The present paper focuses on the meaning of pl. νόμοι in Jer 31/38:33 and Jer 31:36/38:37. The difference between the Hebrew and the Greek texts witnesses to a re-interpretation of Jer 31/38 in the LXX. Differently from the Hebrew original, the Greek text of Jeremiah speaks here not about the Torah of Moses, but rather ...

Seleznev M., Вестник Православного Свято-Тихоновского гуманитарного университета. Серия 1: Богословие. Философия. Религиоведение 2023 № 105 С. 11–25
M. Seleznev. “According to our image” or “to be our image”? (Gen 1:26-27) Gen 1:26-27 is the key text for the biblical concept of human being as the image of God. A detailed analysis of this verse must take into account both the history of the crystallization of the concept in the religion of Ancient Israel, ...

Seleznev M., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2016 Т. 20 С. 929–939
Hosea 1:9 is often said to be dependent on Exodus 3:14-15. The article investigates the arguments adduced in favor of this hypothesis, namely the syntax of the Hebrew sentence, the masoretic accentuation, the syntax of the Old Greek translation and finds them less convincing than it is usually thought. ...

Представления о загробной участи человека в масоретском тексте и старом греческом переводе книги Иова (Иов 14:10–15 и Иов 19:25–27)
Shulyakov L., В кн.: Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология – XXIV (чтения памяти И. М. Тронского). Материалы Международной конференции, проходившей 22–24 июня 2020 г.: труды конференцииЧ. 2.: Институт лингвистических исследований РАН, 2020. С. 1141–1156.
The article focuses on the comparative analysis of two well-known fragments of Hebrew and Greek versions of the Book of Job, which are often perceived as the difference of views on personal eschatology. Christian exegesis sees Job as a forerunner of the belief in afterlife retribution and in resurrection of the dead. In contrast, many ...

Reconsidering the Textual Background of Mark 4.12: A Hebraizing Revision of LXX Isa 6.10 as a Source of the Quotation
Yurovitskaya M., Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies (JSCS) 2022 Vol. 55 P. 141–153
Contrary to the generally accepted hypothesis of the Aramaic background of the Isa 6.9-10 quotation in Mark 4.12, I argue that its primary source was the LXX. Next, explaining the rendering of the last clause וְרָ֥פָא לֽוֹ ‘and he would be healed’ as ἀφεθῇ αὐτοῖς ‘and it would be forgiven them’, I demonstrate that it ...

The article deals with the recent discussion in the field of the Septuagint scholarship (mainly between A. Pietersma and M. Rösel) on the meaning of the expression εἰς τὸ τέλος in the superscriptions of the Greek Psalter. In the Hebrew Psalter superscriptions like this were mostly either performance directions, or directions with instrumentation, using specific ...

Seleznev M., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2013 Т. 17 С. 800–812
The article deals with the treatment of the so-called anthropomorphisms of the Hebrew Bible in the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (the Septuagint). By anthropomorphism we mean attribution of human physical form or psychological characteristics to God (e.g. speaking about God’s eyes, God’s hand, God’s repentance etc.). Within the Septuagint some scholars find a ...

Ἀνομία, ἄνομος, ἀνομέω в псалтири Септуагинты и богословие «закона»
Seleznev M., Шмаина-Великанова А. И., Мусина Л. Ю., Индоевропейское языкознание и классическая филология 2016 Т. 20 № 1 С. 755–764
The article focuses on the use of derivatives formed from the word νόμος (law) with the help of α- privativum in the Greek translation of the Bible (the Septuagint). Derivatives from the base ἀνομ- are used to translate various Hebrew words, most of which have no "legalistic" connotations in Hebrew. The article sets out a ...

Πόλις ασεδεκ in Isaiah 19:18: A Translator's Wordplay or the Actual Jewish Name for 'Leontopolis'?
Seleznev M., Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies (JSCS) 2022 Vol. 55 P. 155–164
Among different explanations of the peculiar reading πόλις ασεδεκ in Isaiah 19:18, the most probable seems to be the one that regards this expression as an allusion to עיר הצדק in Isaiah 1:26. However, observations on the translation technique of the LXX-Isaiah make it dubious that this allusion was created by the translator of Isaiah himself. Additionally, in ...
