Team Success: Aligning Means with Objectives
In corporations, sports, and academia, people often face challenges they cannot handle alone. In such cases, selecting the right team is crucial. Tatiana Mayskaya, Associate Professor at the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences and the International College of Economics and Finance, together with colleagues from foreign universities, examined team characteristics and found that less diverse teams are better suited to objectives where a high average performance is important, whereas more diverse teams are preferable when avoiding failure is critical. The paper has been published in Economic Theory.

Economists Propose More Effective Approach to Reducing Smoking
Economists at HSE University have examined how smokers respond to changes in cigarette prices. When tobacco prices increase, cigarette consumption does not always decline. In fact, spending on tobacco may even rise: according to the researchers, a 1% decrease in cigarette affordability leads to a 0.28% increase in per capita tobacco expenditure. The findings suggest that to reduce smoking rates, tobacco prices must rise faster than household incomes. The study has been published in Voprosy Statistiki.

Межгрупповой контакт, личные и общекультурные стереотипы в межкультурных отношениях: содержание стереотипов о белорусах, китайцах, узбеках и чеченцах в Москве

Вестник Российского университета дружбы народов. Серия: Психология и педагогика. 2023. Т. 20. № 1. С. 41–66.
Grigoryev D., Komyaginskaya E.

This paper uses the Stereotype Content Model to consider the relationship between positive and negative intergroup contact and personal and cultural ethnic stereotypes. The introduction poses the theoretical foundations through defining acculturation and adaptation, and also outlining their relationship with stereotypes and intergroup contact in the context of intercultural relations. The empirical part examines intergroup contact and ethnic stereotypes in Moscow about Belarusians, Chinese, Uzbeks, and Chechens with a gender-balanced sample consisted of 316 ethnic Russians aged 16 to 68 (34 years on average). We attempt to consider three competing hypotheses about the correspondence of valence of intergroup contact and stereotypes: hypothesis of constant valence asymmetry, hypothesis of the usefulness of stereotype-inconsistent information, hypothesis of epistemic defense. As a result in linear mixed models that (1) personal stereotypes were more positive than cultural ones; (2) however, they were located relative to each other in accordance with the quadrants of cultural stereotypes; (3) intergroup contact was associated with personal stereotypes in the direction according to the valence of the contact; (4) no evidence for interaction between negative contact and cultural stereotypes, whereas the beneficial effect of positive contact was stronger for those ethnic groups with more negative cultural stereotypes. It was concluded that personal experience has only limited scope for improving an already positive attitude, or worsening a negative one. Therefore, only a social policy aimed at changing cultural stereotypes might be efficient.

Букина А. А., Eritsyan K., Antonova N. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026

Little is known about whether the underlying mechanisms of mental health outcomes differ between ...

Cognitive Distortions Are Not Logical Errors: A Conceptual Clarification
Denisova V., Petrović N., Journal of Rational - Emotive and Cognitive - Behavior Therapy 2026 Vol. 44 No. 35 P. 1–16
Cognitive distortions are routinely described in cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and rational-emotive behavior (REBT) therapies as “errors in logic” or “illogical thinking.” While this terminology is pedagogically convenient, it often obscures a crucial conceptual distinction between violations of logical inference and problems related to the justification, scope, or evaluative force of belief content. In this paper, we do not ...

Galina Oreshina, Journal of Nonverbal Behavior 2026 Article 10919

This study examined whether movement synchrony—absolute, non-absolute, client-leading, and counsellor-leading—was associated with therapeutic alliance in naturally occurring counselling sessions. Twenty-seven video recordings were analysed using motion energy ...
