Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

On the complexity of first-order logics of probability
Speranski S. O., Grefenshtein A., Izvestiya. Mathematics 2026 Vol. 90 No. 4 P. 105–126
The article is concerned with Halpern's first-order logics of probability, which we denote by L_1 and L_2 – the first of these deals with probability distributions on the domain, while the second employs distributions on external sets of possible worlds. The proofs of [Abadi & Halpern 1994] of the complexity lower bound results for L_1 and L_2 ...

Лично-числовая асимметрия: согласование пассивных миративов в казымском диалекте хантыйского языка
Starchenko A., Toldova S., Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2023 Т. 6 № 1 С. 130–148
The study focuses on a previously unrecorded model of split agreement in the mirative paradigm in Kazym Khanty. Split agreement is found when comparing active and passive mirative constructions, as well as in a limited set of uses of non-finite forms. In the passive voice, unlike the active voice, the 3rd person is unmarked and the ...

No ‘iota’ type-shifter in Kazym Khanty
Tiutiunnikova V., Mikhailov Stiopa, Golosov F., Proceedings of Sinn und Bedeutung 2025 No. 29 P. 1593–1608
In this paper, we present new challenging data from Kazym Khanty (a Uralic language spoken in Western Siberia, Russia): in this articleless language, bare singular and bare dual NPs in argument positions can receive indefinite readings on par with definite ones, contradicting the predictions of the classic neo-Carlsonian approach (Chierchia, 1998; Dayal, 2004). We argue ...

Negation as a modality in a quantified setting
Speranski S. O., Journal of Logic and Computation 2021 Vol. 31 No. 5 P. 1330–1355
The idea of treating negation as a modality manifests itself in various logical systems, especially in Došen's propositional logic N, whose negation is weaker than that of Johansson's minimal logic. Among the interesting extensions of N are the propositional logics N* and Hype; the former was proposed in [Cabalar et al. 2006], while the latter has ...

Sharpening complexity results in quantified probability logic
Speranski S. O., Logic Journal of the IGPL 2025 Vol. 33 No. 3 Article jzae114
We shall be concerned with two natural expansions of the quantifier-free ‘polynomial’ probability logic of [Fagin et al. 1990]. One of these, denoted by QPL-e, is obtained by adding quantifiers over arbitrary events, and the other, denoted by p-QPL-e, uses quantifiers over propositional formulas — or equivalently, over events expressible by such formulas. The earlier proofs ...

The emergence of hierarchical alignment in Northern Khanty: a comparative dialectal corpus study
Muraviev N., Linguistica Uralica 2025 Vol. 61 No. 2 P. 106–130
This study investigates the morphosyntactic coding of core arguments in Northern Khanty, with a focus on the use of active/passive voice and subjective/objective conjugation. The goal is to offer a more detailed understanding of the coding patterns across dialects. To achieve this, I analyze corpus data from four Northern Khanty dialects: Obdorsk, Shuryshkary, Tegi, and Kazym Khanty, using ...

The influence of internal possessors on argument coding in Northern Khanty
Muraviev N., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2024 Vol. 5 P. 65–79
The study examines contexts in Northern Khanty where the presence of internal possessors in the noun phrases of the core arguments influences their morphosyntactic coding. Based on the corpus data from the Kazym dialect of Khanty, I investigate contexts in which the presence of a third-person topical possessor in the agent or patient NP leads ...

Adnominal Possession in Turoyo: New Evidence from the Kfarze Dialect
Кашинцева К. В., , in: From Moscow to Baghdad: Studies on Middle Eastern Christianity in Memory of Nikolai Seleznyov.: Brill, 2026.
This article explores the marking of adnominal possession in the Turoyo language. The language employs two sets of possessive suffixes (see Table 1 below) the distribution of which has been somewhat unclear. On the one hand, it has been suggested that these sets could be used interchangeably with nouns denoting body parts, kinship terms, and inherent ...

Two challenges for existentialist approaches to strict negative concord
Rudnev P., TABU: Bulletin voor Taalwetenschap 2024 P. 312–328
I present two challenges for the popular approach to the meaning of negative concord items, or neg-words, as existential quantifiers or indefinites. The first challenge concerns the interaction of that analysis with the approaches to fragment answers as instances of clausal ellipsis. The second challenge stems from the ability of multiple neg-words within one clause ...

Севернохантыйская посессивность и типология детерминации
Mikhailov S., Родной язык: лингвистический журнал 2023 № 2 С. 6–51
In many Uralic languages, possessive agreement markers form a special determiner system. Following several studies that argue for grammaticalization of Uralic possessives into determiners, the current study describes the semantics of four such determiners in the Kazym dialect of Northern Khanty, based on original field data, and sets them against the background of recent results ...

Semantics of the Northern Khanty Salient Article: Definiteness, salience, and obviation
Mikhailov S., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2024 No. 1 P. 7–38
Uralic possessive agreement markers often function as determiners. This paper presents a case study of the Northern Khanty (Kazym dialect) 2sg Possessive that developed into a “salient article”. The Salient Article is definite as it requires informational uniqueness and familiarity, but its distribution is narrower than the distribution of previously described definite determiner types. It ...

Semantics of the Northern Khanty 2SG Possessive and of Related and Competing Markers (Master's thesis)
Mikhailov S., M.: [б.и.], 2021.
This is an unpublished Master's thesis from the HSE University. This paper argues for a radical polysemy account of the extended uses of the Northern Khanty POSS2 markers — -en [poss.2sg] and -ən [poss.2nsg] (the latter only relevant for the possessive markers considered) — whereby each of the extended uses is said to correspond to ...
