HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

The paper examines restrictions on clitic climbing in French. Three types of restrictions are identified - restrictions on the matrix verb (its frequency, semantics, and the presence of a preposition with which the infinitive clause is attached), restrictions on the clitics themselves, and syntactic restrictions (presence of negative particles, complex verb form). The existence of the restrictions ...

Safina M., Studia germanica, romanica et comparatistica 2020 Т. 16 № 4(50) С. 47–54
The article considers the existing points of view on the conceptual metonymy including its manifestations in sentence patterns. The study of the corpus of utterances represented by simple sentences from modern English literature and media allows to find a range of regular metonymic shifts between propositions describing static and dynamic relations. ...

Negative concord in fragments: Reexamining the evidence against the negativity of negation markers
Rudnev P., Glossa: a journal of general linguistics 2024 Vol. 9 No. 1 P. 1–21
I argue that particular restrictions on the recoverability of elided negation in fragment answers in negative-concord languages follow from the semantics of questions. Drawing parallels with other ellipsis phenomena, I also highlight the role of Agree in making certain elided heads recoverable. This invalidates a major argument against the analysis of negative-concord items as universal ...

There is no small clause in Russian phrasal comparatives
Шикунова А. С., Proceedings of ConSOLE 2023
This paper focuses on Russian comparatives, particularly those commonly referred to as phrasal and argued to contain a smaller amount of elided structure than the clausal comparatives. I investigate the restrictions on the syntactic position of the standard of comparison (SoC) in Russian phrasal comparatives and show that the existing analyses of this type of ...

This paper is a corpus-based study of Slavic appositional constructions. Out of material taken from seven Slavic languages, two aspects of the morphosyntax of close appositions in Slavic are considered: case concord and definiteness marking. The first section of the paper considers the factors that affect case concord in appositions in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Czech, ...

The many facets of agreement
Caha P., Kasenov D., Starke M. et al., Muenchen: Lincom Europa, 2023.
Agreement is a phenomenon that spans multiple areas of linguistic theorizing. On the one hand, agreement has been regarded as purely syntactic/morphological phenomenon because it has no clear contribution to meaning. However, this clashes with the observation that agreement may also influence interpretation in subtle ways, allowing languages to express nuances in meaning that would ...

Idioms, NP position, and control: Evidence from Russian
Rudnev P., Shikunova Alexandra, Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2022 Vol. 5 No. 1 P. 91–106
This paper challenges the legitimacy of the idiom diagnostic, which has long seen employed in syntactic argumentation to distinguish movement from base generation. In response to [Burukina 2020], who reanalyses several Russian control predicates in terms of ECM (exceptional case marking) based on the idiom test, we question the necessity of the alternative analysis. We provide data from ...

Itkin I., Kratylos 2021 Vol. 1 No. 66 P. 124–148
The article is a detailed review of the monograph by the famous Indo-Europeanist R. Kim on the dual of nouns in the Tocharian languages. Along with a number of quite convincing theses, R. Kim's book also contains controversial propositions. Thus, the author's statement about the almost complete disappearance of the dual number in Tocharian A seems to be ...
