Subject of study. A method for measuring the refractive index using an automated autocollimation goniometric system. Aim of study. Simplification of the procedure for precision measurements of the refractive index of transparent solid and liquid optical materials. Method. To measure the refractive index of triangular prisms, goniometric methods based on measuring the angles of refraction of light by a substance are often used. A proposed method allows determining the refractive index by measuring the angle of light deflection by a prism after reflection from the inner face in an automated mode. Main results. The results of measurements of the refractive index of two triangular prisms made of various glasses ‒ N-BK7 and SF-1 using the proposed method on an autocollimation goniometric system are presented. The measurement error did not exceed 1.5×10-4 when compared with the nominal value for these prisms at the wavelength of the autocollimator radiation source, which proves the prospect of using such a method for high-precision measurements of the refractive index. Practical significance. The method proposed in the article can be used to measure the refractive index of triangular prisms made of optically transparent materials with different refractive angles using a goniometric system in an automated mode. The method can also be used for liquid optically transparent substances placed in a hollow triangular prism.
