HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

6th HBP Student Conference on Interdisciplinary Brain Research

Frontiers Media S.A., 2022.
Compiler: J. Covelo

We are excited to present the proceedings of the 6th Human Brain Project Student Conference on Interdisciplinary Brain Research, an open forum for exchange of knowledge within and across the various research fields addressed by the Human Brain Project (HBP). The conference was organized by young researchers for young researchers, as a virtual meeting for the second time now, from the 22nd to the 25th of February 2022. Reflecting the multidisciplinarity of the HBP, the abstracts from young researchers of this year’s edition cover a wide range of topics: from brain organisation, theoretical and clinical neuroscience to brain simulation and brain-inspired architectures. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation under the Specific Grant Agreement No. 945539 (Human Brain Project SGA3).

Reality monitoring in native and foreign language
Dolgoarshinnaia A., Martín-Luengo B., , in: 6th HBP Student Conference on Interdisciplinary Brain Research.: Frontiers Media S.A., 2022. P. 123–127.
Reality monitoring (RM) is a type of source monitoring for which individuals have to distinguish between internally and externally generated memories. Discrimination between external and internal sources of memory is suggested to rely on specific perceptual and cognitive characteristics that are intrinsic to these sources and serve as cues for memory monitoring. For instance, greater ...

Heart-brain interactions in anxiety influence decision-making and learning
, in: 6th HBP Student Conference on Interdisciplinary Brain Research.: Frontiers Media S.A., 2022. Ch. 4 P. 22–29.
Interception is defined as sensing, integration, and regulation of internal states of an organism by the brain. Interceptual processing plays a significant role in the functioning of a human organism, including homeostasis and allostasis, the perception of self and other, the processing of reality, learning, and decision-making. Interceptual processing may be enhanced or disrupted in ...

Overcoming the Curse of Dimensionality with Synolitic AI
Zaikin A., Sviridov I., Sosedka A. et al., Technologies 2026 Vol. 14 No. 2 Article 84
High-dimensional tabular data are common in biomedical and clinical research, yet conventional machine learning methods often struggle in such settings due to data scarcity, feature redundancy, and limited generalization. In this study, we systematically evaluate Synolitic Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs), a framework that transforms high-dimensional samples into sample-specific graphs by training ensembles of low-dimensional pairwise ...

Background. The application of cortical and subcortical stimulation during awake craniotomy mitigates the risk of persistent postoperative speech deficits. However, the functions of some white matter pathways remain inadequately understood, particularly the frontal aslant tract (FAT) of the dominant hemisphere. Aim. To evaluate the efficacy of cortical and subcortical stimulation techniques in the localization of glial tumors near ...

Machine Learning Approach to Anticancer Activity Prediction of Transition-Metal Complexes Based on a Large-Scale Experimental Database
Krasnov L., Malikov D., Kiseleva M. et al., Journal of Medicinal Chemistry 2026 Vol. 69 No. 8 P. 8838–8851
In this work, we developed a straightforward data-driven approach to predict the cytotoxicity of metal complexes based entirely on their (metal + ligands) composition. To this end, we have manually curated MetalCytoToxDB─a comprehensive experimental database comprising 26,500 IC50 values for 7050 metal complexes against 754 cell lines from 1921 articles. Based on these, machine learning ...

Pogodaeva S., Miletina O., Antipova N. et al., Cancers 2025 Vol. 17 No. 19 Article 3228
Pediatric tumors such as neuroblastoma are characterized by a genome-wide ‘transcriptional burden’, surmising the involvement of multiple alterations of gene expression. Search for master regulators of transcription whose inactivation is lethal for tumor cells identified the non-POU domain-containing octamer-binding protein (NONO), a member of the Drosophila Behavior/Human Splicing family known for the ability to form ...

Sidedness matters: single-cell perspectives on left- and right-sided colorectal cancer
Yanova M., Maltseva D., Tonevitsky A., Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology 2025 Vol. 13 Article 1720996
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Tumor sidedness, distinguishing left- (LCRC) and right-sided (RCRC) cancers, has emerged as a critical clinical determinant, influencing patient prognosis and therapeutic response. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these differences remain poorly understood. Recent advances in single-cell RNA sequencing ...

Experience-dependent neuroplasticity in the hippocampus of bilingual young adults
Gallo F., Voits T., Rothman J. et al., eNeuro 2025 Vol. 12 No. 6 Article ENEURO.0128-25.2025
Models of experience-dependent neuroplasticity predict that the acquisition and extensive use of a new skill trigger a nonlinear trajectory of neurostructural modifications, where initial expansion of relevant brain areas subsequently (once the skill is acquired) gives way to volumetric renormalization. Such predictions also apply in the domain of language during learning and/or simultaneous management of ...

The unique role of bilingualism among cognitive reserve-enhancing factors
Federico Gallo, Jubin Abutalebi, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2024 Vol. 27 No. 2 P. 287–294
The umbrella term cognitive reserve-enhancing factors refers to those experiential and lifestyle factors (such as intellectual activities, regular physical exercise, healthy nutrition, educational attainment, etc.) that may help individuals to compensate for age-related neural deterioration, thus enabling them to maintain relatively stable cognitive functioning during senescence. In the last 10 years, mounting evidence has shown ...

Cognitive efficiency and expertise-dependent automaticity in the working memory performance of bilinguals
Federico Gallo, Liliia Terekhina, Jubin Abutalebi et al., Brain and Cognition 2025 Vol. 187 Article 106308
The concepts of cognitive efficiency (CE) and expertise-dependent automaticity are central to the understanding of cognitive adaptations related to bilingual experiences. This study examined their behavioral manifestations in bilingual young adults by manipulating the cognitive load of a working memory task; the possibility to manipulate the difficulty of a cognitive task is necessary to observe ...
