At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Quantum-well and modified image-potential states in thin Pb(111) films: an estimate for the local work function

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. 2020. Vol. 32. Article 435001.
Aladyshkin A. Y.

Quantum-confined electronic states such as quantum-well states (QWS) inside thin Pb(111) films and modified image-potential states (IPS) above the Pb(111) films grown on Si(111)7×7 substrate were studied by means of low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) in the regime of constant current I. By plotting the position of the n-th emission resonances U_n versus n^(2/3) and extrapolating the linear fit for the dependence U_n (n^2/3) in the high-n limit towards n = 0, we estimate the local work function for the Pb(111) film: W=3.8 ± 0.1 eV. We experimentally demonstrate that modifications of the shape of the STM tip can change the number of the emission peaks associated with the resonant tunnelling via quantized IPS levels for the same Pb terrace; however it does not affect the estimate of the local work function for the flat Pb terraces. We observe that the maxima in the spectra of the differential tunnelling conductance dI/dU related to both the QWS and the modified IPS resonances are less pronounced if the STM tip becomes more blunt.

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R., Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering 2026 Vol. 886 P. 249–255
Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular ...

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Shulman I., Lebedev A., Studies in Computational Intelligence 2026 Vol. 1265 P. 266–273
A discrete-time model is presented for the self-organization of the X/Twitter social network to the edge of a phase transition, characterized by avalanche-like propagation of information in the network. The model is based on the analogy between the critical dynamics of the X social network and sandpile cellular automata with Manna rule on the Chung-Lu ...

Arutyunov K., Kharitonov I. A., Petrosyants K. O., JETP Letters 2026 Vol. 124 No. 6 P. 1–16
Superconducting properties of metallic micro- and nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors. Of particular interest is the nonequilibrium current-induced state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channel. The most interesting phenomenon here is the stepped I–V characteristic, explained by a process known as phase slip center activation. If the origin of such step-like ...

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 579 Article 150159
Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors; however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related descriptors. Three ML algorithms ...

Ranging Precision Comparison of Direct and Non-Line-of-Sight LiDAR Systems Based on SNSPD
Махлуф М., Ozhegov R., Elezov M. et al., Фотоника 2026 Vol. 20 No. 6 P. 414–423
This paper compares the ranging precision of direct time-of-flight (dToF) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) LiDAR architectures, both using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD). Both systems operate at 1550 nm with a 50 ps pulsed laser and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC). The dToF configuration achieved approximately 100 µm precision at 10 m, while the NLOS configuration achieved 500 µm precision for ...

N.I. Fedotov, Maizlakh A. A., V.V. Pavlovskiy et al., Surfaces and Interfaces 2022 Vol. 31 Article 102015
Bi2Te3 is a material with high efficiency of thermoelectric energy conversion. Recently, it was also recognized as a topological insulator, and is often used as the basis for creation of other types of topological matter. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is widely considered as a simple method for growing of multicomponent films, but not as a ...

Aladyshkin A. Y., Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2023 Vol. 127 No. 27 P. 13295–13301
Local structural and electronic properties of thin Pb(111) films grown on Si(111)7x7 surface are experimentally studied by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). It is shown that the visible height h of the monatomic step on Pb(111) surface demonstrates oscillatory dependence on bias voltage U. The period of these oscillations coincides with the period ...

Fedotov N., Zaitsev-Zotov S., Physica Status Solidi - Rapid Research Letters 2019 Vol. 13 No. 5 Article 1800617
Topologically protected surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators provide a model framework for studying massless Dirac electrons in two dimensions. Usually a step on the surface of a topological insulator is treated as a scatterer for the Dirac electrons, and the study of its effect is focused on the interference of the incident and scattered ...

Marques C. A., Neat M. J., Yim C. M. et al., New Journal of Physics 2020 Vol. 22 No. June Article 063049
In a superconductor that lacks inversion symmetry, the spatial part of the Cooper pair wave function has a reduced symmetry, allowing for the mixing of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing channels and thus providing a pathway to a non-trivial superconducting state. Materials with a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and with strong spin–orbit coupling are a platform ...

The enhancement of the critical temperature in thin aluminium films
Sedov E., Golokolenov I., Konstantinidis G. et al., , in: Cryogenics 2019. Proceedings of the 15th IIR International Conference: Prague, Czech Republic, April 8-11, 2019Vol. 15.: P.: IIF-IIR, 2019. P. 363–368.
It is well known that new effects appear in superconductors with the reduction of their size. Among them one is the most interesting – phenomenon of changing of critical temperature. It can be both decrease and increase in different metals, however, despite the number of existing works, there is still no generally accepted conception of ...
