Chained by One Chain: Mechanisms of Electoral Mobilization at the Local Level in the Ethnic Republics of Russia
Problems of Post-Communism. 2022. P. 1-12.

Researchers of Russian elections have long noticed that in a number of ethnic republics, the level of electoral mobilization and voters’ political conformism is higher than the average in Russia. Which factors influence a high level of electoral mobilization? How does it work? The article attempts to answer these questions by analyzing qualitative data collected through focus groups in five regions: Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Komi, Chuvashia, and Yakutia. The results of the study allow us to conclude that a high level of electoral mobilization is the result of a combination of three factors, each of which affects different categories of voters.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a critical event that has challenged regionalist-secessionist parties to maintain their dominance at the regional level, because it has questioned the attractiveness of the idea of independence for the electorate. Chmel K., Klimova A., Savin N., Post-Soviet Affairs 2023 Vol. 39 No. 4 P. 291-307
The spread of COVID-19 sparked debates about whether incumbents should focus on saving lives or the economy. Politicians’ decisions in this dilemma could determine whether they remain in office. “Saving the economy” is predicted to affect re-election chances positively in economic voting theory. However, a public health crisis can shift the electorate’s preferences in favor ...

Elections are among the most important and least understood institutions in contemporary authoritarian regimes. Theoretically, electoral authoritarian regimes should have an informational advantage that makes them more robust than other types of authoritarian regimes, but much empirical evidence suggests otherwise.
