When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Идентичность, стиль и стилизация: социолингвистическая перспектива

Terra Linguistica. 2022. Т. 13. № 2. С. 11–29.
Е.Н. Молодыченко

The exact definition of style and the range of phenomena that it is 'made up of', arguably, remain to be elusive. A somewhat similar characterization can also be applied to identity. One possible solution which allows for a more encompassing view of style and, simultaneously, can be said to provide further insights into the phenomenon of identity (especially when it comes to 'enacting' the latter) is theorizing style 'dynamically' as being more about styling than fixed sets of whatever can be said to 'make up' a certain ('static') style. This view of style has been promoted for some time in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. Within this framework, styling can be seen as a more or less deliberate attempt on the part of an individual to position themselves in social encounters, which can, in turn, be construed in terms of (a combination of) 'tokens' of certain social 'types'. Viewing identity dynamically as 'performing' or 'styling' is a perspective within which such facets of identity theorization as enhanced agency of an individual in forming and enacting their identity, multiple identifications resulting in so-called 'fractured' identities, and being able to position oneself in a multiple (unique) ways in social encounters can be neatly explained. Viewing styling identity as being 'all about the usage of semiotic resources' and theorizing said resources vis-a-vis indexicality and metapragmatic processes also allows extending the range of these resources to naturally incorporate all other (nonlinguistic) object-signs and to explain in indexical and metapragmatic terms how these object-signs perform because the ways both linguistic and nonlinguistic signs operate indexically turn out to be identical. This complex framework is finally exemplified by means of examples of styling different personae (social 'types') within one discourse thus 'voicing' their respective stances and, simultaneously, allowing the author to align with these groups of their putative audience. Another example that is being used to illustrate the principles discussed above are so-called 'lingua-cultural types' (personae), as theorized and studied in the Russian strand of sociolinguistics.

Bursov K., Slioussar N., Kokhova M. et al., Brain and Language 2026 Vol. 275 Article 105719
Previous EEG studies demonstrated ample evidence for a major influence of morphological regularity on inflectional processing. However, regularity effects may be attributed to different properties of inflectional classes: to type frequency, to productivity, or to defaultness (assumed only in some models). In many languages, these factors cannot be teased apart, but it is possible in ...

I will therefore investigate this ...
