HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Dolgorukov V., Popova E.,
The paper examines some structural parallels between normative standards in logic and game theory. On the one hand, the standard view holds that both logic and game theory are normative disciplines. On the other hand, their normative status remains a subject of debate. It is shown that parallel research programs have emerged within logic and ...

Reassessing the metrics of integration: Toward eliminating the blur between theory and statistics to clarify effect sizes, measurement, and causality in acculturation psychology
Grigoryev D., Gallyamova A., Komyaginskaya E., International Journal of Intercultural Relations 2025 Vol. 108 Article 102240
The debate around the integration hypothesis in acculturation research frequently centers on the interpretation of effect sizes. While critics argue that these effects are too small and inconsistent to be meaningful, supporters maintain that they reflect statistically robust and theoretically coherent patterns. This controversy reveals a broader epistemological challenge in psychology: persistent ambiguity regarding what ...

This article addresses the problem of distinguishing cognitive distortions, cognitive biases, and logical fallacies from an epistemological perspective. It emphasizes that despite their interrelation, these concepts have different origins, natures, and contexts within cognitive processes. The following key differences are highlighted: cognitive distortions are associated with negative perceptions of oneself, the environment, and the future, ...

Premodern medicine faces radical challenge in the recurrent epidemics of the 14–17 centuries. The epidemics contribute to the dissolution of authority of the “learned and rational” physician and deepen the rift between medical theory and practice. Such a situation stimulates a range of responses from medical thinking that delves into the domain of the “uncertain”, ...

On the Epistemological-Ontological Transition Made by Illusionism and Realism
2023 Vol. 7 No. 4 P. 199–214
The article is about the discussion between realists and illusionists on phenomenal consciousness, phenomenal properties or qualia. The author considers what he calls epistemological-ontological transition made by illusionists and realists – transition from epistemologically significant statements to ontologically significant ones. The option to avoid such transition is tested in order to overcome some obstacles that ...

Schedrina I., Pruzhinin B. I., Щедрина Т.

the discussion that broke out in the early 2000s about the crisis state of the domestic science of criminal law, including due to the lack of involvement of interdisciplinary knowledge, was actualized by changing the nomenclature of scientific specialties in 2021, which resulted, in particular, in the emergence of a new scientific specialty 5.1.4 "Criminal ...

Knowing Through Hearing, Towards an Epistemology of Auditory Perception
Mendez Martinez J. L., Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 2022 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 168–182
This paper proposes some guidelines for the undeveloped discussion of auditory epistemology. Auditory epistemology is an approach concerned with the perceptual basis for knowledge and belief, specifically around audition. The article pursues two goals. Firstly, it claims that addressing auditory perception from the viewpoint of epistemology is more fruitful than the discussion on phenomenology which ...

Epistemic Relativism and the Gettier Problem: Insights from Philosophy of Science
Vervoort L., Shevchenko A., Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 2022 Vol. 59 No. 1 P. 58–80
The aim of this article is to present a variant of epistemic relativism that is compatible with a language practice especially popular among scientists. We argue that in science, but also in philosophy, propositions are naturally ‘relativized’ to sets of hypotheses or theories, and that a similar language practice allows one to interpret canonical problems ...

Late Neoplatonic Criticism of Ancient Sceptic Philosophy
Kurdybaylo D., Tantlevskij I., Платоновские исследования 2021 Vol. 15 No. 2 P. 74–89

The article is devoted to the re-problematisation of F.A. Hayek's legacy in philosophy of law and social theory. Taking as an example the works of SPSU professor I.Y. Kozlikhin, and some other works about Hayek's theory of law, the author demonstrates several inadequacies of the current literature on Hayek's legal philosophy. In criticizing these highly debatable approaches, the author ...

Icons, Interrogations, and Graphs: On Peirce's Integrated Notion of Abduction
Pietarinen A., Bellucci F., Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 2020 Vol. 56 No. 1 P. 43–61
Peirce's semiotic characterization of abductive reasoning in the 1903 Syllabus and in its drafts is related to the interrogative mood of the conclusion of abductive reasoning, both in the light of the Syllabus and in that of Peirce's post-1903 analysis of abduction and speculative grammar. The relevant pages of the Syllabus also present two non-standard ...

Concerning Paradigmatic Status of Psychological Science: For a Flexible and Flowing Psychology in the Face of Practical and Theoretical Challenges
А., Sorokin P. S., Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science 2020 Vol. 54 No. 3 P. 604–612
We comment on the article by Zagaria et al., which explicates the ““soft” nature of psychology: a minor consensus in its “core”” (Zagaria et al., p. 1), manifested by the discordant character of definitions of psychological “core-constructs”. Zagaria et al. build on the assumption that psychological science should reside in the status of a paradigm, meanwhile the real state ...
