Contrary to Georges Danton's catchphrase “You cannot carry your homeland with you on the soles of your boots”, Russian emigrants of the “first wave” (1918-1940) managed to create “another Russia” abroad. Various aspects of her political and social life are discussed in the book by Oleg Budnitskii. One of the plots of the book is the fate of "Russian money" abroad: the last part of the so-called Kolchak's gold; finances of the imperial family; Petrograd loan (silver) treasury, which ended up in the hands of General P.N. Wrangel and became a source of funding for his army. In another section, the author examines the search by emigrants for ways to overcome Bolshevism - from hopes for its evolution or decay from within to ideas of transition to terror. The most extensive part of the volume is devoted to the history of emigration during the Second World War, when some professed the principle “against the Bolsheviks even with the devil,” even if his name is Adolf Hitler, while others believed in the degeneration of Soviet power and tried to reconcile with it. The collection also includes portraits of prominent figures in the emigration - diplomats, lawyers, entrepreneurs, writers. The studies included in the book are mainly based on materials from foreign archives.
