The author suggests an original conception of the current state of psychology, wondering whether the metaphor crisis is applicable to it and insisting that the metaphor, used as an instrument of assessment and explanation has become declarative to a degree and almost lost its link to the actual state of things in psychology. The author analyzes discussions of the crisis, characteristic of Russian psychology, their high emotionality and unanimity of assessments (psychology is in a crisis), coincidence of discussions with the social historical transformations in Russia in the 1990s. It is pointed out that the crisis rhetoric in Russian methodological discussions was provoked by social and psychological factors. The diagnosis being proclaimed by Russian scientists is not so much a reflection of the actual state of things as an expression of an identity crisis that a considerable part of the Russian psychological community are going through.
