Since 1890s till the end of 1920s the works of Leo Tolstoy, published in Spanish in Spain, aroused interest in the professional legal community not only because of their artistic and intellectual value, but also because of the posing of social problems that could not be solved without legal methods of influence. The Spanish lawyers were especially interested in “Anna Karenina” (the novel was published in Spanish translation in 1888), “The Kreutzer Sonata”, and “Resurrection”. The paper examines the attitude towards Tolstoy's views among representatives of various trends: positivism, jusnatural-ism, sociological type oflegal thinking, anarchism. The novel “Resurrection”, published in 1899 in Spain, became the starting point for a discussion between representatives of the “spiritual” and “materialistic” trends in criminal anthropology. Ofgreat interest for Spanish lawyers was also the writer's reasoning about peasant life and land use.
