The aim of this paper is to show that the concept of moral responsibility in the sense of basic desert does not play a significant role in the moral justifications of social practices, including practices of praise and blame that are commonly associated with the concept of moral responsibility. First, I explain the link between the problem of free will and the concept of moral responsibility. Then, I argue that moral justification of social practices in most cases does not depend on the concept of basic desert. Finally, I address some objections.
