"Что еще за "Божьи дела"? Они ничто": дело дона Карлоса, главного индейца Тескоко
The inquisition and burning of the indigenous leader Don Carlos Ometochtli
Chichimecateuctli of Texcoco, is a notable event of early 16 th century Mexican
history. Don Carlos was the son and grandson of legendary pre-Hispanic leaders of
Texcoco, a city which was one of the three partners in the preconquest Aztec
Alliance. Don Carlos’s actual accuser was an indigenous Christian neophyte from
Chiconautla named Francisco. In 1539 Mexico Valley was suffering from a severe
drought. Indigenous people from the village Chiconautl wanted to perform pagan
rites, however fray Antonio de Ciudad Rodrigo persuaded them to conduct
Christian ceremonies and prayers. Don Carlos came to the village just at the time
of the Christian processions and he was very upset about everything that was
happening. Francisco claimed that Don Carlos said bad things that defamed God
and Holy Catholic faith.
Was Don Carlos really a heretic? Who would benefit from persuading him to
death? What motivated him to act «against the faith» and other Indians to testify
against him? In this article, I will try to cover these issues.
