The article dwells on the issue of appllying the theoretical constructs "mental states of society" and "mental deprivation", formulated in the traditions of Russiansocial psychology, in the study of modern society during a pandemic. The theoretical fields of mental (psychological) states of society and the concept of mentaldeprivation developed by Russian social psychologists are presented. Analyzes current research on pandemics, including the COVID-19 pandemic, relevant to themain ideas discussed in line with these theories. It is argued that the history of the development of Russian social sciences makes it possible, among the scientificheritage, to identify theoretical ideas, models, concepts that were previously supported by empiricism and relevant to the modern needs, namely, the study of society in conditions of social isolation, deprivation and forced digitalization of social relations typical of the COVID-19 pandemic.
