Монах или маг? Проблема колдовства и магии в коптской монашеской среде по материалам археологии и литературных источников
This paper discusses the survival of magical practices and concepts in Christian Egypt and its reliance on the attitudes formed in the Greco-Roman period. Literary evidence from Christian Egypt — theological instruction, homilies, hagiographies, etc. — shows a strong disapproval of usage of any magical or pagan practice, but papyrological and archaeological finds from late antique Egypt witness a different picture. The aim of this paper is
to discuss textual and archeological data that confirm the existence of magical practices in monastic milieu and suggest a certain ‘double-standard’ attitude of Egyptian monks in regards to the production and distribution of magical amulets. It also aims to present tentative answers to the questions arising among the scholars of Egyptian Christianity in relation to the aforementioned aversion to magic and contradicting material evidence.
