The anthology “StauferDinge” focuses in the sense of the “material turn” on concrete objects, pictorial representations, written carriers or object contexts that originate from the Staufer era or - from a reception-historical perspective - are directly related to the Staufers. The research initiated by Knut Görich on the contemporary pictures of Friedrich Barbarossa has shown how productive a closer look at the contexts of origin and contexts of use in this area can be. This anthology on “StauferDingen” asks how material culture was classified in the Staufer period. The volume takes a look at concrete objects and seeks to decipher their historical dimension from a threefold perspective: It is devoted to (1.) the artefactual genesis of objects, (2.) the transformation and differentiation processes of historical attributions of meaning, and asks (3.) according to the status of the “Staufer things” as epistemic objects. A history of the "Staufer Things" therefore not only promises deeper insights into the high medieval past, but at the same time a changed understanding of our present picture of the Staufer age.
