The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems: Proceedings of the 24th International Conference KES2020

Vol. 176. Elsevier, 2020.
Compiler: M. Cristani, C. Toro, C. Zanni-Merk, R. Howlett, L. Jain

This edition of Procedia Computer Science represents the proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Knowledge - Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems (KES 2020), organised by KES International and held in virtual form on the KESonline virtual conference platform, 16-18 September 2020.    This is the first time that this conference has been held virtually, and this has been made necessary because of the Covid-19 pandemic which has swept the world.  Covid-19 has caused disruption, economic problems, and human tragedy in many countries.  We offer condolences and sympathy to those who have sadly lost loved ones or colleagues in the pandemic.    KES 2020 was the 24th event in a series of broad-spectrum intelligent systems conferences first held in Adelaide, Australia in 1997. The main aim of this KES conference series is to provide an internationally respected forum for the dissemination of research results and the discussion of issues relating to the theory, technologies and applications of intelligent engineering and information systems.     This truly international conference attracted submissions from a substantial number of researchers and pra ctitioners from all over the world, who submitted their papers to four general tracks and 40 special sessions on specific topics.  A large number of submissions was received and each paper was peer reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee.  From them, 401   high  - quality papers were accepted for oral presentation and publication in Procedia Computer Science, submitted for indexing in Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI), Scopus and INSPEC.    The conference chairs would like to express their gratitude to the Keynote Speakers: Prof Yukio Ohsawa, University of Tokyo, Japan, title of talk: Beyond Explainable Learning to Explanatory Intelligence- A Systems Innovation Approach on Data Jackets -'; Dr Urszula Stańczyk, Silesian University of Technology, Poland, title of talk: On the uniqueness of writing styles- Problems and tasks of stylometry'; Dr. Ralf Christian Haerting, University of Aalen, Germany, ‘title of talk to follow.'; and Dr Guido Governatori, Data 61, Dutton Park, Australia, title of talk: ‘title of talk to follow'.    We would like to acknowledge also the Programme Co-Chairs, the General Track Chairs, the International Programme Committee members and reviewers for their valuable efforts in the review process, helping us to guarantee the highest quality possible for the conference. We would also like to thank the organisers and chairs of the special sessions which make an essential contribution to the success of the conference.  Lastly, we would like to thank all the authors, presenters and delegates for their valuable contribution in making this an extraordinary event.     KES International hopes and intends that KES2020 will make a significant contribution to international research collaboration and understanding, an essential task for the promotion of scientific joint work and excellence.

The Impact of Object Immutability on the Java Class Size
Bugayenko Y., Zykov S. V., , in: Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems: Proceedings of the 24th International Conference KES2020Vol. 176.: Elsevier, 2020. P. 1868–1872.
According to the subjective opinions of many industry experts, object immutability is a virtue in object-oriented programming, since it leads to side-effect-free design, cleaner code, better concurrency, and many other factors. However, it has never been empirically demonstrated exactly how immutability affects quality metrics of object-oriented programs. In the following research, we analyzed 97508 classes from 240 public ...

Coping with AI errors with provable guarantees
Tyukin I., Tyukina T., van Helden D. P. et al., Information Sciences 2024 Vol. 678 Article 120856
AI errors pose a significant challenge, hindering real-world applications. This work introduces a novel approach to cope with AI errors using weakly supervised error correctors that guarantee a specific level of error reduction. Our correctors have low computational cost and can be used to decide whether to abstain from making an unsafe classification. We provide ...

Overcoming the Curse of Dimensionality with Synolitic AI
Zaikin A., Sviridov I., Sosedka A. et al., Technologies 2026 Vol. 14 No. 2 Article 84
High-dimensional tabular data are common in biomedical and clinical research, yet conventional machine learning methods often struggle in such settings due to data scarcity, feature redundancy, and limited generalization. In this study, we systematically evaluate Synolitic Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs), a framework that transforms high-dimensional samples into sample-specific graphs by training ensembles of low-dimensional pairwise ...

Stable On-the-Fly Learning for Dynamic Neural Networks With Delayed Inputs
Kibkalo Vladislav, Chertopolokhov V., Mukhamedov A. et al., IEEE Access 2026 Vol. 14 P. 14369–14392
This study presents on-the-fly identification and multi-step prediction of nonlinear systems with delayed inputs using a dynamic neural network combined with a smooth projection onto ellipsoids. The projection enforces parameter constraints that guarantee stability, while a Lyapunov–Krasovskii analysis yields computable ultimate error bounds. Riccati-type matrix inequalities are derived, providing an efficient vectorization–projection–devectorization implementation suitable for ...

Shipilov F., Barnyakov A., Ivanov A. et al., / Series Physics "arxiv.org". 2026.
A fast simulation of the detector response is a vital task in high-energy physics (HEP). Traditional Monte-Carlo methods form the backbone of modern particle physics simulation software but are computationally expensive. We present a machine-learning-based approach to fast simulation of the Focusing Aerogel Ring Imaging Cherenkov (FARICH) detector response. Given a particle track and momentum, ...

DPN Verifier: A Toolkit for Faster Soundness Verification and Repair of Process Models with Data
Suvorov N. M., Proceedings of the Institute for System Programming of the RAS 2026 Vol. 38 No. 3(2) P. 49–66
Data Petri Nets (DPNs) extend classical Petri nets to model processes where data directly influences control-flow, enabling a comprehensive view of system behavior and possibility to detect failure points that could otherwise be hidden. Soundness is a correctness criterion that captures such failure points as deadlocks and livelocks as well as model boundedness and absence ...

Xiong N., Long W., He D. et al., Algorithms 2026 Vol. 19 No. 5 Article 386
In the era of data-driven education, educational social networks generate large volumes of high-dimensional and complex-structured data through learner interactions, collaborative activities, and resource-sharing behaviors, posing significant challenges to traditional unsupervised learning methods. Such data often exhibit non-convex distributions, heterogeneity, and noise sensitivity, making conventional clustering approaches insufficient for capturing their intrinsic structural relationships. To ...

With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, and deep learning in particular, models have emerged that are capable of delivering highly accurate predictions. However, the internal logic of such models remains difficult to interpret—an issue of critical importance, especially in domains where the correctness of an algorithm directly affects high-stakes decision-making. One promising avenue for ...
