Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

Pragmatic Markers in Dialogue and Monologue: Difficulties of Identification and Typical Formation Models
Natalia Bogdanova-Beglarian, Blinova O. V., Tatiana Sherstinova et al., , in: Speech and Computer. 22nd International Conference, SPECOM 2020Vol. 12335.: Springer, 2020. P. 68–78.
The paper deals with new research findings on pragmatic markers (PMs) use in spoken Russian. The study is based on two speech corpora: “One Day of Speech” (ORD, which contains mainly dialogues), and “Balanced Annotated Collection of Texts” (SAT, which contains only monologues). We explored two annotated subcorpora consisting of 321,504 tokens and 50,128 tokens respectively. ...

Rhythmic Structures of Russian Prose and Occasional Iambs (a Diachronic Case Study)
Kazartsev (Evgenii Kazartcev) E., Давыдова А. Ю., Sherstinova T., , in: Speech and Computer. 22nd International Conference, SPECOM 2020Vol. 12335.: Springer, 2020. P. 194–203.
The paper deals with the study on rhythmic structures of phonetic words conducted on the base of Russian novelistic prose of the initial three decades of the 20th Century. Due to the revolutionary changes in the society, Russian language has changed a lot during this period, at least on lexical and stylistic levels, and one could ...

Проблема отношения мышления и речи в трудах Л.С. Выготского и А.Р. Лурии на материале сенсорной афазии
Маркашова Е. И., Badina D., Skvortsov A., Национальный психологический журнал 2025 Т. 20 № 4 С. 60–68
Background. The problem of the relationship between thinking and speech is fundamental for psychological science: it underlies the understanding of formation and functioning of human consciousness, marked by its speech form. The study of aphasia is one of the promising areas of research into the relationship between these functions, which also has important practical significance in the field of ...

Syllable-Initial Phonemes Affect Neural Entrainment to Consonant-Vowel Syllables
Kazanina N., Houghton C., Cucu M. O., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2022 No. 16 P. 1–11
Neural entrainment to speech appears to rely on syllabic features, especially those pertaining to the acoustic envelope of the stimuli. It has been proposed that the neural tracking of speech depends on the phoneme features. In the present electroencephalography experiment, we examined data from 25 participants to investigate neural entrainment to near-isochronous stimuli comprising syllables ...

Multidimensional Signals and Analytic Flexibility: Estimating Degrees of Freedom in Human-Speech Analyses
Coretta S., Casillas J., Roessig S. et al., ADVANCES IN METHODS AND PRACTICES IN PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE 2023 Vol. 6 No. 3 Article 1
Recent empirical studies have highlighted the large degree of analytic flexibility in data analysis that can lead to substantially different conclusions based on the same data set. Thus, researchers have expressed their concerns that these researcher degrees of freedom might facilitate bias and can lead to claims that do not stand the test of time. ...

Neural signatures of syntactic variation in speech planning
Sauppe S., Choudhary K., Giroud N. et al., PLoS Biology 2021 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 1–20
Planning to speak is a challenge for the brain, and the challenge varies between and within languages. Yet, little is known about how neural processes react to these variable challenges beyond the planning of individual words. Here, we examine how fundamental differences in syntax shape the time course of sentence planning. Most languages treat alike ...

«Крылатое» и «окаменелое»: идиоматика дискурса
Belyaev A., В кн.: Порядки дискурса в философии и культуре. Алёшинские чтения – 2020: Материалы всероссийской научной конференции с международным участием Москва, 10–12 декабря 2020 г.: Барнаул: ИП Колмагоров, 2020. С. 12–16.
Phrase (quotation, idiom) as something short and therefore easily and successfully conveyed (translated), as time goes on, obtains different features and characteristics, which can be approximately situated on a scales like “worldwide” vs. “local”; “rare” vs. “tired” etc. The idiomatic corpora is huge, and the floating status of so called “winged” of each idiom/phrase causes ...

Method for Measuring the Intelligibility of Speech Signals in the Kullback–Leibler Information Metric
Savchenko L., Measurement Techniques 2019 Vol. 62 No. 9 P. 832–839
We consider the problem of determination of the intelligibility of speech of a speaker according to a fi nite fragment of the speech signal. It is shown that the main diffi culties in the solution of this problem are connected with the necessity of analysis of small samples. To overcome the problem of small samples, we proposed a ...

Fuzzy Phonetic Encoding of Speech Signals in Voice Processing Systems
Savchenko L.V., Savchenko A.V., Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics 2019 Vol. 64 No. 3 P. 238–244
In this paper, we studied the phonetic approach for voice processing. A method for automatic recognition of speech signals, in which each quasistationary segment is associated with a fuzzy set of phonemes, was developed. We proposed the operation of the probabilistic triangular norm for fuzzy sets corresponding to the input frame and the nearest reference phoneme. The developed ...

Karamalak O., Пожидаева Е. В., Научные ведомости Белгородского государственного университета. Серия: Гуманитарные науки 2019 Т. 38 № 1 С. 35–42
Contemporary philosophy of language studies a broad range of questions connected with the functioning of language in the environment. There can be singled out three paradigms of language existence: speech, written language, and digital language. Diachronically language appeared and initially existed in the form of speech. The paper regards speech as a biological ability of ...

Tomas E., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2018 Vol. 2 P. 145–150
Classical models of speech production have primarily focused on the psycholinguistic aspects of the process, identifying its components (i. e., meaning generation, lexical selection, functional assignment, phonological encoding and articulation) and how they interact [Bock, Levelt 1994; Dell, Change, Griffin 1999; Fromkin 1973; Garrett 1975 et al.]. Auditory perception in the aging brain: the role of inhibition and facilitation in early processing
Kazanina N., Stothart G., Neurobiology of Aging 2016 Vol. 47 P. 23–34
Aging affects the interplay between peripheral and cortical auditory processing. Previous studies have demonstrated that older adults are less able to regulate afferent sensory information and are more sensitive to distracting information. Using auditory event-related potentials we investigated the role of cortical inhibition on auditory and audiovisual processing in younger and older adults. Across puretone, ...
