Yama, Yamī and the Vedic particle ghā̆: on the interpretation of RV 10.10.10

In the present paper I argue that the traditional translation of the Vedic Sanskrit discourse particle ghā̆ as “perhaps, indeed, certainly”, etc., albeit acceptable for some of its occurrences, cannot explain a number of difficult passages from the R̥gveda, in particular, in the hymn-dialog of the first humans, the twins Yama and Yamī (RV 10.10). On the basis of a pragmatic analysis of this dialogue as well as a philological study of other attestations of ghā̆ in Vedic, I reconsider the traditional interpretation of ghā̆. I argue that ghā̆ functions as a consecutive connector, meaning “then, (if so) then, as a result”. Additional evidence in support of this analysis is provided by the cognates of ghā̆ in other Indo-European languages, first of all, by Slavic že, which can serve to express causal relations, as well as by numerous typological parallels.
