HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

The Extended Mind Thesis and Its Applications

P. 127–147.
Farina M., Levin S.

A growing number of researchers claim that our traditional views about what cognitive processes are and where they take place must be revised. According to these researchers, the cognitive processes that make up our minds can reach beyond the traditionally conceived boundaries of individual organisms to include as proper parts aspects of the organism’s physical, technological, and socio-cultural environment. This idea is known as the Extended Mind Thesis (EMT). In recent years a fruitful debate about the scope and validity of EMT has emerged both within the empirical sciences (e.g. psychology and neuroscience) and in the philosophy of mind. The goal of this chapter is to investigate the empirical support for EMT by clarifying the extent to which researchers in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience in their everyday work and practice already implicitly assume extended cognition ideas or even actively operate with them.

Functional Brain Connectivity and Musical Training: Insights from EEG Phase Synchronization during Music Perception
A. Radygina, S. Kulikova, Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences 2025 Vol. 95 No. 6 P. 963–970
Musical training has a significant impact on brain organization, leading to functional and structural adaptations that enhance auditory, visual, motor, and cognitive processes. This study investigates how extensive musical training shapes functional brain connectivity by comparing professional musicians and non-musicians. Using EEG phase-locking value (PLV) analysis, we examined neural synchronization across alpha, beta, and gamma frequency ranges during music ...

The development of musical abilities, including absolute pitch, musical memory, rhythm sense, and musicality, at a high degree is determined by a hereditary component (up to 68 %). The studies implementing a genome-wide linkage and association approach to musical aptitude have revealed more than 100 genetic loci. This spectrum is comprised of the genes encoding ...

The Oxford Handbook of Global Realisms
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2025.
Realism is an artistic practice that aims to faithfully represent reality. Historically, it has been practiced across different media, from early pictorial art and epic oral narratives, through literature and visual arts, to film, music, and digital media. However, an understanding of what it means to “faithfully represent reality” is not universal; rather, it varies ...

How do we represent sets/ensembles of objects (e.g., apples on a tree) in the visual system? The summary statistics view suggests that the visual system has access only to ensemble summary statistics (the average apple color and its variability). The feature distribution view claims that the visual system has explicit (conscious) access to the entire ...

Neurodiverse AI
Vallverdú J., Alshanskaia E., BioNanoScience 2025 Vol. 15 Article 406
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have predominantly mirrored neurotypical brain architectures (NBA), optimizing for efficiency, predictability, and standardized cognitive patterns. However, non-neurotypical brains (NNB) exhibit unique neurochemical, hormonal, and functional mechanisms that underpin divergent thinking, creativity, and alternative problem-solving strategies. Drawing from evolutionary biology, we emphasize how neurodiversity serves as a critical mechanism for adaptability, survival, ...

Luzhnova K., Kotov A. A., В кн.: Психология познания: материалы Всероссийской научной конференции.: Яр.: Филигрань, 2023.
Categorical learning plays a key role in cognitive development, starting from infancy. Adults are more likely to use selective attention during learning, focusing on the primary features of objects, while children employ distributed attention, analyzing multiple features simultaneously. The use of selective attention leads to difficulties in learning when the learned rule becomes ineffective and ...

The article analyzes the existing naturalistic approach to the problem of free will. This approach identifies itself as “neurophilosophical”. It is argued that neuroscience is necessary to formulate an empirically grounded and conceptually complete notion of “free will”. It is shown that the neurophilosophical position on free will is inconsistent with theories that advocate both ...
