This study examines the history of video art as a special form of moving image that consistently violates the rules and traditions developed in cinema and on television. Alexandra Persheeva shows how, with the help of montage, it is possible to push together not only images, but also entire discursive fields, how meanings arise at the junction of frames, and when the screens are combined and semantics gets built up. Each of the chapters of the book is devoted to various types of editing, tells about its occurrence and functioning in the screen culture, and about the experiments of artists, changing the methods of “montage thinking” that have become familiar. The author pays special attention to the role of gallery exhibition space, which, unlike the cinema hall, opens up the aesthetic possibilities of "spatial editing", as well as the role of the audience that becomes a co-author of the artist when in the field of video art. The book mentions and analyzes more than 250 experimental films and videos that may be of interest to both specialists and a wide circle of lovers of contemporary art.
