The article presents an analysis of attempts of the Russian Empire to establish protectorate over the Eastern Turkestan in 1850s and 1870s in connection with anti-Qing Muslim rebellions in the region. Author characterizes proposals of the Russian frontier administra-tions of Western Siberia and Turkestan region on establishing of protec-torate and reaction of central imperial authorities on these proposals, as well as reasons why protectorate was not established.
