Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

An algorithm for assessing the professional potential of an otorhinolaryngologist based on the identification of medical risk factors in the provision of medical care to patients with rhinosi-nusitis has been developed. otorhinolaryngologists from 32 subjects of the Russian Federation were screened and the treatment of patients with polyposis rhinosinusitis was analyzed. The proposed methodological approach ...

Small Amphiphilic Peptides: Activity Against Broad Range of Drug-Resistant Bacteria and Structural Insight into Membranolytic Properties
Lohan S., Mandal D., Choi W. et al., Journal of Medicinal Chemistry 2022 Vol. 65 No. 1 P. 665–687
We report the synthesis and antibacterial activities of a series of amphiphilic membrane-active peptides composed, in part, of various non-genetically coded hydrophobic amino acids. Lead cyclic peptides, 8C and 9C, showed broad-spectrum activity against drug-resistant Gram-positive (MIC=1.5-6.2 µg/mL) and Gram-negative (MIC=12.5-25 µg/mL) bacteria. Cytotoxicity study showed the predominant lethal action of the peptides against bacteria ...

Stereochemistries and Biological Properties of Oligomycin A Diels–Alder Adducts
Omelchuk O., Malyshev V., Medvedev M. et al., Journal of Organic Chemistry 2021 Vol. 86 No. 12 P. 7975–7986
Oligomycin A is a potent antibiotic and antitumor agent. However, its applications are restricted by its high toxicity and low bioavailability. In this study, we obtained Oligomycin A Diels− Alder adducts with benzoquinone and N-benzylmaleimide and determined their absolute configurations by combining 1H and ROESY NMR data with molecular mechanics conformational analysis and quantum chemical ...

Naphthoquinone-derived polyol macrolides from natural sources
В.А. Russian Chemical Bulletin 2019 Vol. 68 No. 5 P. 955–966
New biologically active substances isolated from natural sources provide valuable information on structural motifs that are important for a specifi c type of activity and can also be used as drugs or serve as raw materials for chemical modifi cation in order to develop new pharmaceuticals. This review considers natural antibiotics combining two pharmacophores in their structure: a redox-active ...

Chugunov A., Panina I., Efremov R.,

Panina I., Chugunov A., Krylov N. et al.,

Nisin/lipid II interaction in bacterial membrane: molecular dynamics study
Panina I., Chugunov A., Dmitry Nolde et al., , in: FEBS Open Bio Volume 9, Issue S1 Supplement: 44th FEBS Congress, From Molecules to Living Systems, Krakow, Poland, July 6‐11, 2019Vol. 9: 44th FEBS Congress, From Molecules to Living Systems, Krakow, Poland, July 6‐11, 2019.: Oxford: Wiley, 2019. Ch. 27-069 P. 269–269.
The worldwide rapid emergence of resistant bacteria put at threat the efficacy of antibiotics, thus the development of novel antibacterial agents is urgently needed. The cell wall precursor lipid II consisting the chemically conservative pyrophosphate group represents a promising pharmaceutical target. Antimicrobial peptides, that target lipid II, i.e. lantibiotic nisin, could be excellent prototypes for ...
