HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Intransitively winning chess players’ positions
Poddiakov A., Doklady Mathematics 2024 Vol. 110 No. Suppl 2 P. S391–S398
Chess players' positions in intransitive (rock-paper-scissors) relations are considered. Intransitivity of chess players' positions means that: position A of White is preferable (it should be chosen if choice is possible) to position B of Black, if A and B are on a chessboard; position B of Black is preferable to position C of White, if ...

Mathematical Elements of Elementary Education
Posicelskaya M. A., Rudchenko T. A., Semenov A., Doklady Mathematics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 1 P. S10–S41
In recent decades, several Russian schools have been implementing a world-unique education program of mathematics for elementary schools. In it, the landscape of school arithmetic is radically expanded due to the basic objects of modern mathematics and computer science. These objects and their operations are visual, making them much more comprehensible than traditional arithmetic. The ...

Vishnyakov Y. S., Semenov A., Shabat G. B., Doklady Mathematics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 1 P. S78–S91
This paper considers an approach to mathematical education adequate to the task of developing mathematics and its applications in the 21th century. This approach is based on improving the efficiency of the educational process by maintaining the motivation of students of various categories. The basis for the formation of motivation is, on the one hand, ...

Creating New Mathematics by Schoolchildren
A. L. Semenov, Soprunov S. F., Ivanov-Pogodaev I. A., Doklady Mathematics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 1 P. S132–S136
The paper discusses an example of an educational project in modern mathematics in which school students create mathematics that is new to them. The mathematical results produced by the students in the theory of definability also have an “absolute” novelty, i.e., are the basis for professional publications. The described course was based on recent results of this ...

Intransitivity and meta-intransitivity: meta-dice, levers and other opportunities
Poddiakov A., Lebedev A., European Journal of Mathematics 2023 Vol. 9 Article 27
Various objects and systems in intransitive relations of superiority (“rock-paper-scissors” relations) are described (intransitive sets of sticks, dice, chess positions, machines, biological species etc.). The concept of meta-intransitivity of superiority is introduced. Meta-intransitivity is a property of systems, which are in intransitive relationships between one another, and, at the same time, each of them contains ...

Poddiakov A., / Series arXiv "math". 2018. No. 1809.03869.
The intransitive cycle of superiority is characterized by such binary relations between A, B, and C that A is superior to B, B is superior to C, and C is superior to A (i.e., A>B>C>A—in contrast with transitive relations A>B>C). The first part of the article presents a brief review of studies of intransitive cycles ...
