Standing gravity waves regimes in a shallow water resonator

P. 67–76.
Slunyaev A., Ezersky A., Mouazé D., Chokchai W.

Arisingmodulations of surface gravitywaves in a shallow-water resonator under harmonic forcing is discovered in laboratory experiments. Different types of modulations are found. When certain conditions are satisfied (appropriate frequency and sufficient force of excitation), the standing waves become modulated, and the envelopes of standing waves propagate in the channel. Strongly nonlinear numerical simulations of the Euler equations are performed reproducing the modulational regimes observed in the laboratory experiments. The physical mechanism responsible
for the occurrence of modulated waves is determined on the basis of the simulations; quantitative estimates aremade with the help of a simplified weakly nonlinear theory. This work was initiated by and performed under the guidance of Prof. A. Ezersky. We dedicate this text to the memory of him.

Fundamental hydrodynamic breathers on standing waves
He Y., Slunyaev A., Mori N. et al., Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena 2026 Vol. 488 Article 135098
Extreme wave localizations in nonlinear dispersive media, arising from modulation instability in weakly nonlinear wave interactions, can be effectively modeled by breather solutions. These breathers are exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and provide accurate models for understanding and controlling unidirectional rogue wave dynamics in numerical simulations or laboratory settings. A recent study by Y. He et ...

Support Link Formation in Contests: Theory and an Experiment
Antsygina A., Teteryatnikova M., Tremewan J. C. et al., / Series "SSRN Working Paper Series". 2025.
Many competitive environments allow for a third party to be indirectly involved by supporting one or both sides in the conflict. Such support can come from trade partners, colleagues, or allies, who can in turn benefit from a supported party's success. We use theory and an experiment to investigate how support relationships develop endogenously in ...

During laboratory studies of many rock samples, it becomes necessary to develop an appropriate database. Adding new records and maintaining such databases is especially important when creating and updating mathematical and physical models describing hydrocarbon and ore deposits, gas storage facilities, engineering (in particular, transport, hydraulic, pipeline, etc.) structures, the development and operation of which ...

Two Models for 2D Deep Water Waves
Dremov S., Kachulin D., Dyachenko A., Fluids 2022 Vol. 7 No. 6 Article 204
In this paper we propose two Hamiltonian models to describe two-dimensional deep water waves propagating on the surface of an ideal incompressible three-dimensional fluid. The idea is based on taking advantage of the Zakharov equation for one-dimensional waves which can be written in the form of so-called compact equations. We generalize these equations to the ...

Experimental evidence of nonlinear focusing in standing water waves
He Y., Slunyaev A., Mori N. et al., Physical Review Letters 2022 Vol. 129 No. 14 Article 144502
Nonlinear wave focusing originating from the universal modulation instability (MI) is responsible for the formation of strong wave localizations on the water surface and in nonlinear wave guides, such as optical Kerr media and plasma. Such extreme wave dynamics can be described by breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) like by way of example the famed ...

Stellar interferometry for gravitational waves
Park I. H., Choi K. -., Hwang J. et al., Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics 2021 Vol. 2021 No. 11 Article 008
We propose a new method to detect gravitational waves, based on spatial coherence interferometry with stellar light, as opposed to the conventional temporal coherence interferometry with laser sources. The proposed method detects gravitational waves by using two coherent beams of light from a single distant star measured at separate space-based detectors with a long baseline. ...

The Peregrine breather on the zero-background limit as the two-soliton degenerate solution: An experimental study
Chabchoub A., Slunyaev A., Hoffmann N. et al., Frontiers in Physics 2021 Vol. 9 Article 633549
Solitons are coherent structures that describe the nonlinear evolution of wave localizations in hydrodynamics, optics, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates. While the Peregrine breather is known to amplify a single localized perturbation of a carrier wave of finite amplitude by a factor of three, there is a counterpart solution on zero background known as the degenerate ...

In the framework of general relativity theory, we consider a space-time whose metric depends on only one coordinate and time. We choose a gauge class such that all the constraint conditions of the theory of gravity as a gauge theory are explicitly solved and construct a Hamiltonian depending only on dynamical physical variables (gravitons). We ...

Revisiting the democracy-private investment nexus: Does inequality matter?
Barber IV B., Jensen J., Zenker C. et al., Journal of Comparative Economics 2018 Vol. 46 No. 4 P. 1215–1233
Contrary to the predictions of a large theoretical literature, recent cross-country evidence suggests autocracies can generate statistically indistinguishable levels of private investment compared to democracies. We argue that the previous exclusion of inequality explains part of this puzzle. We model current investment as a function of investors’ beliefs about future tax rates, which are conditioned ...

Application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to deep water waves

We develop a method for the application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to the analysis of surface water waves and present here some evidence on its efficiency. The general idea is to interpret nonlinear wave groups in terms of soliton-type structures - envelope solitons in the framework of the integrable nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Such analysis can improve understanding of the nonlinear ...

In contrast to the previous calculations of the similar effect we study the realistic case of the gravitational radiation frequency below the plasma frequency of the surrounding medium. Siparov S., Samodurov V., Laptev G., Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 2017 Vol. 467 No. 3 P. 2813–2819
Further analysis of data previously obtained during the monitoring observations of 49 astrophysical water (22 GHz) masers shows that in some cases the intensity of an individual component of the maser spectrum changes periodically, on time-scales of tens of minutes. It is argued that this variation cannot be the effect of instrumental errors, weather conditions ...
