Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

Application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to deep water waves

P. 277–282.
Slunyaev A.

We develop a method for the application of the Inverse Scattering Technique to the analysis of surface
water waves and present here some evidence on its efficiency. The general idea is to interpret nonlinear
wave groups in terms of soliton-type structures - envelope solitons in the framework of the integrable
nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Such analysis can improve understanding of the nonlinear wave group
dynamics and, in particular, could help to elaborate tools for short-term forecasting of dangerous waves
in the sea. The technique may also be applied to the problem of the information decoding in soliton based
optical transmission lines.

Self-similarity of rogue wave generation in gyrotrons: Beyond the Peregrine breather
Slunyaev A., Rozental R., Ginzburg N. et al., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2024 Vol. 183 Article 114884
Within the framework of numerical simulations, we study the gyrotron dynamics under conditions of a significant excess of the operating current over the starting value, when the generation of electromagnetic pulses with anomalously large amplitudes (“rogue waves”) can be realized. The averaged shape of high-power pulses is shown to be very close to the celebrated Peregrine breather. At ...

Soliton groups and extreme wave occurrence in simulated directional sea waves
Slunyaev A., Physics of Fluids 2024 Vol. 36 No. 7 Article 077101
The evolution of nonlinear wave groups that can be associated with long-lived soliton-type structures is analyzed, based on the data of numerical simulation of irregular deep-water gravity waves with spectra typical to the ocean and different directional spreading. A procedure of the windowed Inverse Scattering Transform, which reveals wave sequences related to envelope solitons of the nonlinear ...

Extreme dynamics of wave groups on jet currents
A. V. Slunyaev, Shrira V. I., Physics of Fluids 2023 Vol. 35 No. 12 Article 126606
Rogue waves are known to be much more common on jet currents. A possible explanation was put forward in Shrira and Slunyaev [“Nonlinear dynamics of trapped waves on jet currents and rogue waves,” Phys. Rev. E 89, 041002(R) (2014)] for the waves trapped on current robust long-lived envelope solitary waves localized in both horizontal directions become possible, ...

Stellar interferometry for gravitational waves
Park I. H., Choi K. -., Hwang J. et al., Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics 2021 Vol. 2021 No. 11 Article 008
We propose a new method to detect gravitational waves, based on spatial coherence interferometry with stellar light, as opposed to the conventional temporal coherence interferometry with laser sources. The proposed method detects gravitational waves by using two coherent beams of light from a single distant star measured at separate space-based detectors with a long baseline. ...

The Peregrine breather on the zero-background limit as the two-soliton degenerate solution: An experimental study
Chabchoub A., Slunyaev A., Hoffmann N. et al., Frontiers in Physics 2021 Vol. 9 Article 633549
Solitons are coherent structures that describe the nonlinear evolution of wave localizations in hydrodynamics, optics, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates. While the Peregrine breather is known to amplify a single localized perturbation of a carrier wave of finite amplitude by a factor of three, there is a counterpart solution on zero background known as the degenerate ...

Transformation of envelope solitons on a bottom step
Ducrozet G., Slunyaev A., Stepanyants Y., Physics of Fluids 2021 Vol. 33 P. 1–14
In this paper, we study the transformation of surface envelope solitons traveling over a bottom step in water of a finite depth. Using the transformation coefficients earlier derived in the linear approximation, we find the parameters of transmitted pulses and subsequent evolution of the pulses in the course of propagation. Relying on the weakly nonlinear theory, the ...

Standing gravity waves regimes in a shallow water resonator
Slunyaev A., Ezersky A., Mouazé D. et al., , in: Nonlinear Waves and Pattern Dynamics.: Switzerland: Springer, 2018. P. 67–76.
Arisingmodulations of surface gravitywaves in a shallow-water resonator under harmonic forcing is discovered in laboratory experiments. Different types of modulations are found. When certain conditions are satisfied (appropriate frequency and sufficient force of excitation), the standing waves become modulated, and the envelopes of standing waves propagate in the channel. Strongly nonlinear numerical simulations of the Euler equations are performed reproducing ...
