‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

he article discusses the event structure of morphological causative in Khwarshi Proper dialect of the Khwarshi language (Tsezic< Avar-Ando-Tsezic<Nakh-Daghestanian). We also analyzed the semantic parameters of the morphological causative on -χ-/-k’- and compared them with the semantic parameters of the analytical causative construction. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the ways speaker-oriented modality can be expressed in Khwarshi Proper (Tsezic<Avar-Ando-Tsezic<Nakh-Daghestanian). Our field data also serves to fill some data gaps in the grammatical sketch of Khwarshi Proper [Testelets, Khalilova in print]. Такие же, как вокруг: эквасимилятивные конструкции в хваршинском языке
Poliakova E., RHEMA. РЕМА 2024 № 1 С. 28–60
Equasimilative constructions belong to the semantic field of comparison, but have been studied to a much less extent than comparative constructions. There are practically no areal-typological studies in this area. This paper focuses on equasimilative constructions in Khwarshi proper (Nakh-Dagestanian). Additionally, it provides an overview of equasimilative constructions in the languages of the Caucasus to determine the parameters that ...

Когда обо всем узнаешь последним: эвиденциальность в хваршинском языке
Poliakova E., Вопросы языкознания 2024 № 4 С. 77–95
One of the common features of the Nakh-Daghestanian languages is the evidential opposition between some of the past tense verb forms, which mark (in)direct access to the information. Khwarshi has two synthetic past forms that are traditionally considered to form this kind of opposition, but, according to our data, it may in fact not be based on ...

Симметрическая и ретроспективная темпоральная подвижность в андийских языках
Filatov K., Томский журнал лингвистических и антропологических исследований 2025 № 4(50) С. 75–86
The article is dedicated to the typology of temporal mobility, that is the ability of verbal forms to have temporal opposition. Based on several Andic languages (< Avar-Andic-Tsezic < Nakh-Dagestanian), two formal subtypes of temporal mobility are introduced. The first subtype, — symmetric mobility, assumes that the basic and the past forms are equally marked, ...

Numeral systems in Lezgic languages
Melenchenko M., Folia Linguistica 2025 Vol. 59 No. 3 P. 785–821
The paper presents an overview of numeral systems in Lezgic languages (East Caucasian) and discusses hypotheses about their diachronic development. Similarly to other branches of the East Caucasian family, languages of the Lezgic branch have either a decimal (base-10) or a vigesimal (base-20) system. Decimal systems are attested in languages and dialects in the northwestern ...

The present article examines the marker guža (гужа) in Andi, a language of the Avar-Andic branch of the Nakh-Daghestanian family. This marker often co-occurs with finite verb forms, so one may think of analysing it as a verbal suffix that derives converbs from finite verbs. However, as I show with examples taken from Andi texts, ...

Nominal Paradigms in Kina Rutul
Konstantin V. Filatov, / НИУ ВШЭ. Серия WP BRP "Linguistics". 2020. № 99.
The paper provides a description of nominal inflection in Kina Rutul, a variety of the Rutul language (< Lezgic < Nakh-Daghestanian). The description is based on three concepts of paradigmatic classification: class of inflectional equivalence, inflectional type and paradigmatic effect. Class of inflectional equivalence describes main patterns of concatenation between root, case / number exponents ...

The paper presents a tentative overview of pronouns in Ginyanga, an understudied Kwa language spoken in Togo and Ghana; in particular, personal pronouns, reflexive pronouns, demonstratives and quantifiers. Description and determination in Tanti Dargwa NPs
Lander Y., Linguistics 2022 Vol. 60 No. 3 P. 809–828
This paper focuses on the noun phrase in Tanti Dargwa (East Caucasian) and presents evidence for the distinction between modifiers proper (adjectival phrases, participial relative clauses and non-genitive adnominal NPs) and determiner-like elements (demonstratives, indefinite pronouns, numerals and most quantity expressions) in this language. Crucially, this dichotomy, which presumably reflects the distinction between the determinative ...

Согласование по косвенности в нахско-дагестанских языках: обзор эмпирических данных
Daniel M., Рема 2021 № 2 С. 102–130
The paper is a survey of all available descriptive data on a rare agreement pattern observed in East Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) languages under which nominal dependents take different forms depending on whether their head is in the nominative case or any other case. I show that, depending on the language, “agreement in obliqueness” is attested in ...
