The article is devoted to the images of ornithoanthomorphic kinnarasin the art and literature of Ancient India, their origin, mythology and interpretation in the visual arts. Appeared in the early Buddhist iconography, images of these celestial musicians, passed into the iconography of other religions — Hinduism and Jainism, and became popular in the Southeast and East Asian Art after the migration of Buddhism. The most vivid images of kinnaras in Indian art can be seen in the reliefs of the cave temples of South India (Ajanta, Ellora, Mamallapuram). The article pay particular attention also to the historiography of the issue.
