At present, the effect of targeted memory reactivation during slow-wave sleep (SWS) on auditory recognition remains unexplored. We tested a possibility to improve recognition of difficult sounds after their presentation during SWS and the correlation of recognition with electrophysiological parameters of brain activity in two groups of healthy volunteers. For the main group of subjects, after two consecutive sessions of recognizing one of the two deviant sounds in the oddball paradigm, we presented only one sound during the SWS in a different sequence. In the control group, we played the same sequence with a new deviant sound during the SWS. For the main group after daytime sleep, we observed a significant improvement in recognition of that sound, which was repeatedly presented during the SWS stage. This improvement was accompanied by an increase in the amplitude and a decrease in the latency of Mismatch Negativity (MMN) – a component of the eventrelated potential. The control group had no significant changes in the sounds’ recognition and in the parameters of MMN after sleep. Our data indicate that targeted reactivation of auditory memory during SWS may contribute to better recognition of sounds, and this progress correlates with electrophysiological patterns of brain activity.
